I'm finally resigned to look for a rifle range near Charlotte. I'm tired of driving all the way to leeds which is a haul and not very large. I don't want one where I have to be a member of the NRA. Are there any? 300yards or more would be great. I'm not going to worry about cost this year.

Coleman’s creek. It’s well worth the price of admission.

Meck wildlife, PHA, RWCA, and CR-PC.
I hope you understand the deep irony of allowing your dislike for a gun lobby to prevent you from shooting your guns.

2nd take aim training. Stony and his family are good people, and the membership is dirt cheap.

Foothills shooting complex in Cleveland county is nice, but is closed to LE only 3-4 days a week, we do a lot of our annual firearms training there. The facility was paid for by fish and wildlife funds.

I will not set foot on Take Aim range again.

When I was shopping for a private club the primary reason to go private was - I was DONE with getting muzzle-flagged at public shooting ranges. It happened every damned time I went out.

I was on the tour of the range with whoever was running it that day - not Stoney - and guess what happened? My escort stopped to chat with a buddy and the dude flagged me with his rifle. He sent his kids downrange to set targets and flagged THEM with his rifle. Range officer said nothing. maybe didn't even notice. I left. That's not the place for me and I recommend against if this behavior is still the norm.

Keep in mind that the "NRA member" requirement is often due to NRA provided range insurance. It's simply a fact that range insurance is hard to obtain and the NRA is one of the few sources for reasonable rates.

Yup. What Tim said.

Agree completely. A cavalier attitude to safety is a short path to an accident that is entirely preventable. I was admonished once for being rude to another club member where I shoot but the part the other guy neglected to tell the board was that he swept me and a couple others with a loaded SKS at a break to set targets. I was the only one to point out the issue and insist he step off the firing line and keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction till everybody got back. His reply? "What's your problem? Safety's on." 😠

Check out Foothills. It's a public range, but every time I've been there, Range Officers have been on the ball, and it's been very safe.

I was in your shoes about 10yr ago, got tired of driving from N CLT to Leeds when it’s nothing to write home about. Plus Leeds still had the “Brasshole” to deal with, not sure if he’s still around.
I’ve been to most of the ranges listed here and for me it came down to RWC and PHA. CRPC had a long wait, high fees, and the day I was there a very annoying RO.
I would say go check out these ranges with a member if possible, or go shoot a match there to get a feel for things.

I aee no irony in this at all. They are not a gun lobby.
Fair enough, and I will not defend them. I look at it this way though:

If I'm willing to pay the Sheriff's ransom for my right to carry I'll buy that shyster Wayne a tie so I can shoot. Or more objectively: Paying the money doesn't damage me and I benefit by joining my club. Not paying the money doesn't damage them and denies me something useful.

Just perspective, that's all. I hope you find something good and post all about it. I've already learned of a few ranges I didn't know.

I think he died because I've gotten there at sunrise on several Occasions in the past several years and he hasn't come skulking around after the first shot.

CRPC will get you out to 300.

NRA required.

$500 initiation fee. Background check you have to pay for. Plus regular dues of $240. Plus 20 hours volunteer time.

Then you'll have to do a mentorship, supervised shoots, and qualification shoots.

I joined pre-covid last year. Shutdowns really boogered up the process as they kept taking members on but couldn't qualify them on ranges. They've finally put a hold on new membership until February or March. Hopefully they'll get all caught up on qualification backlog beforehand.

The RSO guys are decent in my experience. If you're catching flak it's because you earned it.

Like any club, there's going to be persons in powerful positions who maybe irritate you, regulations you might think excessive ( or not), and orginizational politics. Whatever.

It's a very nice facility. Separate indoor pistol range access once you qualify. That's state of the art. Overall it's worth it and you can be as involved or not as you choose. It's a bunch of hoops to join and get established, but from there on it's not a big deal.

Second this. Very nice place to shoot.

Tell you the truth it doesn't sound like much fun.

I’ll second the concern about the safety aspect of Take Aim. When I was a member, there was no way I would go there on a weekend. It’s a decent facility if you have the range to yourself. To make sure I was alone, I would only go on weekdays, right when they opened, and that was wonderful. I had to take PTO days from work, but I have like 30 of those so no biggie.

If you have the time to plan around peak usage, Take Aim could be an option; it’s certainly cheap enough. However, if you can only go on weekends, etc, I’d go somewhere else.

The first six months isn't much fun. After that you get what you give. It's a really nice facility. Flush toilets in climate controlled buildings are a huge perk if you bring the wife or kids. They have everything...action shooting, archery, shotgun, rifle to 300, plinking ranges, multipurpose/steel range. It's just that the startup costs (not just money) are high.

Had a buddy in Charlotte when I lived there that’s a member. Talked for years about taking a couple of us as guests. Never. Could. Find. A. Weekend. Day. Available. When. There. Wasn’t. A. Match. Going. On.

Yeah. Incentive to shoot the match. I did a few last year and watched a few. Generally the matches are on Saturdays in the morning. The rimfire match is small enough that you can generally find space and still shoot...your just subject to the match director's cease fire calls as he controls the firing line. The military rifle match takes the better part of the day every other month. That's a good one to shoot, more fun than plinking at paper anyway.

Yeah. Incentive to shoot the match.
Maybe so. But also a big dis-incentive to visit the club. Or consider joining if you’re a bench shooter and not into match shooting. My 2 cents.

It’s not the cheapest or the best. I’ll assure you of that. Maybe I should just get Lesa to join. Lol. If you don’t know where to look it is harder to find. But our agent is also a board member.

That sounds like an annoying process. We own a private range in old fort nc, VOD tactical. We ensure all our range members are safe and compentent. Keep membership and new joins capped so the range is never crowded and over booked. Reach out of us if you or anyone you know needs a place to train. [email protected]
