Road King... or Street Glide?

There's two kinds of motorcycle riders. Those with Harley's, and those who wish they had Harley's.

That should light a fire under our Monday discussion.

Although you are correct about there being two types of motorcycle riders. They are those that have been down and those that are going down.

Having owned metric cruisers, sport bikes, dirt bikes, and Harleys, I will never ride anything but a Harley again. With Indian being owned by Polaris, I'll never go near them- ever. Every Polaris I've come across was accompanied by some looking problem. I have heard they made some changes in their QC but when it comes down to the idea of trusting my life to them, after the issues I've had with them... I'll stick to H-D.

To me, Polaris is a lot like Taurus. They can make a pretty pistol, but there's no way in hell I'll trust my life to it.

tl:dr

Road King with quick detachable batwing fairing. That leaves you the option to have your radio and shield, just a clear shield, or nothing at all blocking the wind. It's the most versatile option.

You actually trusted HD with your life when they had crap for brakes from Hayes? At least the majority of HD's have Brembos now. However, 97% of all HD's are still on the road, the other 3% made it home!

Those who ride bicycles in 5:00 PM Charlotte traffic are exempted from my comparison.

I am smart enough to head into town against the heavy flow, ride the "Booty Loop" and then head home after the rush is over.

So, a guy that gave up riding and a guy that says he's not going to get a bike because of distracted drivers are telling riders what bikes to get? That's like taking advice on guns from an anti 2a guy. Y'all keep talking and I'll just keep riding.

No, I'm not anti-motorcycle in any way. I'm anti-idiot. I'm chiming in with over 20 years of riding experience, having owned, ridden, and worked on several kinds of bikes. A better analogy would be to say, "After seeing Hi-Points, Taurus's, and Kel-Tecs have catastrophic failures, there's a reason I stick to Springfield & Colt." with the anecdotal, "I don't do competitive shooting anymore, because they let any idiot on the range."

Here's a quote from Sonny Barger.

"In terms of pure work-manship, personally I don't like Harleys. I ride them because I'm in the club, and that's the image, but if I could I would seriously consider riding a Honda ST1100 or a BMW. We really missed the boat not switching over to the Japanese models when they began building bigger bikes. I'll usually say "F*** Harley-Davidson." ”

So, FG: I'm glad you started this convo because I've been looking at some used motorcycles on Craigslist for a while.

Can anyone ponder what is acceptable on a used motorcycle? What mileage for a 5-8 year old bike? Things like that?

You will find bikes with lots of miles and most with not many miles. There are way more motorcycle owners than there are riders. Buying used is the best way, IMO, because of so many motorcycle owners. Mileage depends on whether or not the owner kept up with maintenance or not. I know lots of guys with way over 100k on ST's that have done nothing but oil changes and regular maintenance. Then you have the garage queens that sit for years without running. That can be just as bad as lots of miles. Bottom line is, if the bike looks like it's been cared for and maintained you shouldn't have any problems. Now, I'm not a big HD guy so I don't know what kind of things you should be aware of on high mileage ones. I do know that a Honda ST and a Goldwing will go way over 200k without EVER going into the engine

Even in 1985, the entire front end of my HD was all made by Mitsubishi.
And furthermore, this thread being MY thread, that's right, my thread, does not request your opinion about HD's, but whether Road King, or Street Glide.

So haters can please exit left, stage left.

I think my next bike will be a BMW GS1200 Adventure or KTM 1290 super Adventure. I would have not looked at one of these 10 years ago, but the technology has improved a lot to help the ride .

Not the same class of bike as a cruiser, but more multipurpose. I like lots of types of motorcycles, sport bikes, dirt, and cruisers and all very different. I miss the Vmax I had in the 80s,68k miles of fun.

Man, after riding a KTM 950 for about 700 miles I was sold on ADV bikes. Amazing motorcycles.

Would love to have a GS or a 1290 SA.
