Back a year or so ago, I asked about the different roll pins that are needed/used in an AR. Someone posted that information and cannot find it anywhere. I would like to have a few extras on hand. Brownell's has a box of SS pins but not sure if they have the AR covered.

While I got your attention, let me ask another question. I built 2 ARs with 16" SS barrels and I had 2 bird cases that I was going to stick on the end. I also bought a box of shims from Brownell's, but I needed close to 1/4 to 3/8 of a turn to fill in between the barrel and device. There is no spacer in that box that even comes close. I ended up changing the muzzle device to a couple that I had on hand but wanted to keep both guns the same.

I had a crush washer of each gun and it was crushed with that much extra space.

Thanks

Wow…what’d it mic between the face of the shoulder and the face of the muzzle?

Yeah I don’t understand how or why you were using shims and crush washer for Birdcage flash hider.

Were the crush washers new or used? If new, then likely something off with the barrel or bird cage threads. If used, toss em and get new. Once used they mostly likely will not time correctly again when tightened enough to securely hold the bird cage.

Bigdave0924, I have changed out many breaks and QD on ARs and never had one that had that much of a gap. It was a full 1/4 of a turn from where the case would have been in the correct position, and I did not want to try to crush the washer anymore. I am not sure there was another 1/4 turn left in that washer. I am going to get a couple new washers and try them.

When you say “gap” do you mean the flash hider is not indexing on the shoulder as in the threads bottom out and it won’t screw on all the way or it’s tight against the shoulder and won’t index right? If it’s tight to the shoulder you should be able to use a new crush washer and tighten until it’s timed how you like. I’m guessing you’re reusing crush washers and I think that’s the problem.

No this is a new crush washer. When I get the break very tight on the barrel, the bottom of the bird cage is at the 3:00 position. I do not think that I can crush the washer to get another 1/4 turn.

I had this list saved using MSC as the source for the roll pins, and a few other items, but it also gives the sizes.

Several years back, I was looking at ordering a box of each size and the boxes of 100 were only a couple of dollars each, where as most AR parts suppliers will charge about a dollar for each pin plus shipping.

I got a friend and think that we will split the order of most pins. I wonder if they have the small C-clamp that is used on the dusk cover and the cotter pin that is used in the bolt.
Thanks again.

How many do you need?
I bought a bag of 100 from Fastenal for a couple dollars as I needed 1.
PM me an address if you like.
