I was speaking with a coach from my son's school at yesterdays open house about the possibility of starting a shooting team. He informed me that they are already working on it. I am really interested in helping get this up and going. I understand that they shoot 22, and shotgun. For any of you that have completed on a school team. What kind of rifles and shotguns were needed, or popular?

FFA skeet and target. 22s lots of 10/22s all kinds of shotguns. For archery we could only use compounds.

It's most likely the NCWRC Hunter Safety team. Contact reps from NCWRC. I assist with my daughters team and can answer some questions. She has shot for the last 2 years. The most popular rifle by far is some kind of CZ. The shotgun portion is single clays for the 20 shot competition with doubles for tie breakers. If you are thinking far enough ahead to the tie break I would get a OU or semi auto. FYI, to get there you need 20 out of 20 in most cases. My daughter shoots archery and the winning score has been 199 out of 200 the last 2 years in District 8.

My gun club (RCWA) is heavily into the youth shooting sports and I have been there on a few occasions when they were shooting shotguns. There is a mix of types but the majority seem to be pump guns, cost I guess.....
I've never seen the rifle shoots so I can't speak to that portion of the program but to see those kids having so much fun AND learning at the same time makes me smile....... from ear to ear!!

Fire - which school?

Ive heard talk of it being at a few schools in my district (either planned or it has been before)
I'd be interested in doing it at mine at some point

Several local school systems near my home club in West Tennessee were associated with the 4H program. We weren't involved with their rifle program, but we'd commonly host 6-7 schools and >400 middle school and high school kids for their trap competitions.

I coach one, there as a lot of really good teams across the state. There is usually a district tournament around March, and a state tournament around April. The state tournament is slightly different from the district.

There are 4 components to the event:
.22 rifle
Modified trap
Archery
Hunter skill (written test and orienteering course.)

My son goes to a charter school in Kernersville, The NC Leadership Academy. Davidson county schools have shooting teams at North Davidson (does), Ledford (they used to, may still have one) West Davidson, (used to may still), East Davidson is starting one. I don't know about South Davidson or Central Davidson.

Have not heard of East starting one, I'll inquire Friday.
Ledford was in talks about it, and I even tossed my hat into the ring for leading it.
West used to, not sure if still do.

I know that ledford used to, I thought they still did. I spoke with a person who has been working with East to get the hunter safety courses done for them.

They did not two years ago, or, to my knowledge, last year.
East - Ive not heard anything about it, but Im interested and will talk to my boss on Friday.

Keep at it guys.

My local club hosts the district 8 competition. I love seeing several hundred kids out there competing. We placed 4th this year, which is a great showing for our small team. There are some powerhouse teams out there though. We barely get a full roster from year to year.

FYI, the best place to gain points is the hunter safety test. Everyone loves shooting. No one want to study for a test.

If you have FFA teachers get them involved. A lot of the kids that would be interested are in those classes. And they can use class time to work on non shooting stuff.

Way back in the 80s... I shot with a PAL league. We practiced in the basement range of a school. They handed me a Anschutz 54 supermatch to shoot.... gosh I wish I was 14again....

Our school has a team, it is through Hunter safety. I think I am one of the coaches this year so I'm looking forward to it. It is 22 rifle. No scopes, compound bow and shotgun. All of the guns usually depend on students/parents price points.

As of last year you can run a scope on 22 rifle. There is a power restriction though. You can also use a hasty sling.

I have worked with quite a few youth shooting sports. Most popular rifles are cz 452 lux due to accuracy and price along with a ridiculous sight radius. Shotguns are a pretty even mix of semi auto and over/under, with pumps here and there.
