Seeking advice for a 12 or 20 gauge

We did accuracy test and both the judge and governor did horrible. Some claim their good but I've never seen one
I've seen a bond arms 410 snake slayer with a 2inch barrel key hole with 45colt.

Was pure junk

OK...tried to reason with you.....If you think a .45 Colt or ACP is not a good defense load regardless of your Freebore consideration inside a house you are ...as you said ...STUPID and DUMB as Hell. You obviously don't know Crap about ballistics and are looking for AN ARGUMENT. Look up who you are talking to about Freebore or ballistics before you spout off about folks being Stupid or Dumb. You are obviously a wanna be ballistician. When you have invested $25 Thousand dollars in equipment to investigate such things and have been written up in a dozen or more articles about Ballistics...get back to me. Thinks about this post before you spout off about Freebore in a defensive weapon used across a room....
Just get a 45 lc gun

Realize that @BatteryOaksBilly & his partner have at least 9 developed cartridges listed in "Cartridges of The World" and have one of the largest, most well equipped private ballistics labs in the USA.
Located in Conway,SC !! We are fortunate to have them as members here at CFF. They are the real deal!

Thanks Pard. I am reluctant to say the things you do for fear of it being taken as bragging. I also will not be talked to as if I have no idea about what I'm saying. These posters do not understand even the basic operation of revolvers apparently. There can be no more Freebore involvement in a revolver than the huge Freebore of the projectile leaving the cartridge case and traveling ahead in a cylinder and then Jumping into the free air between the cylinder face and the forcing cone to then re-engage Another barrel impingement with No rifling until it finally gets to the rifled portion of the barrel. So...Bang-forward travel in the overbore remainder of the cylinder- then Open Air between the cylinder and barrel-then a remash of the bullet to THEN engage the lands and grooves...you obviously can't have more damn Freebore than that.
The keyholing they are experiencing is directly related to Mass and Twist. I have 2 Charter Arms .44 Specials that will shoot one hole groups at 10 yards with 240 grain lead bullets BUT if I increase the mass to 300 grains or more, it will shoot every round and make a perfect key hole representation of the bullet. Wrong TWIST for the bullet weight.
This is an example of folks talking about stuff they haven't even the slightest notion about. At least one of them wasn't insulting. He was only out of his area of expertise.
I hope the gun store lad will eventually make his way here one day. He seems like a nice enough fellow, just doesn't know what he doesn't know. The other one uses the word Stupid and Dumb way too much to be operating with the intellect he has.
My real hope is that the OP could get here and avail himself of all the guns he has questions about. He is a man that asks honest questions and is trying to learn and get some help to solve his problem. Mike and I both are always eager to help folks. We are also eager to nip insolent and insulting know it alls In The Bud...to quote Barney...that is all I have to say about this....I would encourage folks to Think about what you post in serious matters. Really....Freebore.....in a Revolver........

gonna jump in here and im no ballistic genius, i use a judge for close work in the bedroom, loaded with combo of 410 plated loads and 3 45lc hollowpoints following i feel very safe, for the rest of the house a normal pistol gives me comfort. a wadded shotgun shell in close quarters is no more accurate than a slug in my opinion, when ive been awakened and half asleep i want coverage. a shotgun would have to use shells that have no wad so shot would spread faster. just an opinion

That may be but Billy was advocating for the S&W Governor not Bond Arms. I can’t say much about the Governor but I’ve seen a Taurus Judge shoot a palm sized group at 15 yards with .45 colt. It’s not a target pistol but it’s good enough if used within it’s limitations. It also did not keyhole with several different types of ammo.
Being that S&W typically has the edge on quality I’d imagine that the Governor would be at least as good if not better.

As for the OP one thing I haven’t seen mentioned is gun fit. Depending on your wife most standard shotguns don’t fit women very well. The length of pull is often too long . A quality youth gun with a decently short barrel for balance will give more confidence and recoil will be easier to take. At the same time you would still be able to shoot it comfortably with the shortened stock.

I’d lean 20 gauge though the load selection isn’t as good as the 12 but the youth gun selection is better. I’d also go with a pump and get both of you to concentrate on function not speed.

On guns, Remington, Mossberg and Benelli all make quality youth pumps. It doesn’t have to look tactical to work well.

Home defense shotgun? Average size rooms , 14ft to 20ft. Max. Any shotgun will do. 410 bore to 12 ga. " This is where others start jumping up and down saying No, No, No". But in real life, The 410 is very capable.
Don't forget to practice shooting from the hip. Much quicker. Less felt recoil.

20 absolutely 100%. The recoil of a 12 will make most women afraid to shoot it.

Whereas a 20 is about half the recoil.

And with 00 buckshot it won’t matter what gauge it is to the bad guy.

You can lower the recoil a little more by buying a gas operated semiautomatic as opposed to a pump but may not fit the budget.
Absolutely this. I did some rough testing with 12 and 20 gauge shells and some board off cuts. Both worked to reduce the planks to splinters.

Why spend hundreds of dollars on a semi auto shotgun or a pump action shotgun. Unless your wife is an experienced shooter. I know some guys that can't handle a 12 gauge shotgun. After she shoots one round at the unwanted visitor in you home they most likely will either be running like hell or lying on the floor dead or close to it. Look around pawn shops or local gun shops and find a decent double barrel 12 gauge and use low recoil buck shot .my wife is 5'1" inches tall and when we first got married she weighed a whopping 105 pounds .She wanted to go skeet shooting and the only shotgun I had that fit her size was a single shot Stevens that I had shortened the stock and cut the barrel to 18 1/2 incest. She loved it with dove and quail loads and had no problem with the federal reduced load buckshot. Saying this leads to the extra weight of a double barrel and 2 shots. For under $500 I'm sure you can find a decent double barrel in 12 or 20 gauge.
