Shogun

I've really been enjoying the show. Not caught up on this week's, but have watched all the others. I have to watch it during daytime hours, otherwise, I don't follow the subtitles. I suspect we'll probably get some pretty killer fight scenes soon.

I didn't watch or read lol until the 3rd episode. Then I had to go back and watch from the start and now record every Tuesday night then I can keep looking back to read the sub titles. I've really enjoyed it so far.

Shogun, and the rest of James Clavell's Asia Series, are great historical fiction. Shogun is based upon an amazing historical figure. William Adans (John Blackthorne in the book) was the first Englishman man to reach Japan, and became the first and only white man ever to become "Hatamoto" or direct advisor to the ruler of Japan.

Just noticed last night that there is an English dubbed version available on Hulu. Didn't see it until after watching episode 4 but may try it out for the next one.

I’ve really enjoyed it, can be a bit slow at times, and the story is very complex so keeping up with the politics can be a bit tough for me.

I was afraid that it was going to be another "woke" remake. I guess I'll have to check it out.
Nothing woke so far. Just feudal Japan politics, fighting, and some love interests to date. I have yet to spot any non-binary samurai, or any of the Japanese characters being portrayed by strong black women.

Funny you mention that. Apparently, it isn't woke for some. Read this article last week. Dude's wondering why there aren't any black people in Shogun because Japan was apparently full of them in the 17th century?

Yeah that's why I watched it! That and my fascination with the light skinned Japanese women. Honestly good lord.

I talked with a Japanese sword and armor expert I know about it recently. Asked him how historically and culturally accurate it was. His reply: “Perfect.”

His only quibble was with how they portrayed seppuku for women. He said it would have been slightly different during that time period.

I loved how they maintained the reverence for the sword without it becoming bloody silly like it does in some stuff. They're tools. Venerated, culturally significant and somewhat holy, but they carried and used them in the show as actual weapons.

My biggest joy was seeing the spear, bow and rifle being the predominant weapons used in battle, which is never done right.

Didn't do a damn thing to cure my Yellow Fever though lol

Yeah, I don't think my wife appreciates my, uh, "fondness" for Anna Sawai.

I keep TRYING to watch it but can't get past Episode 1 and the wife comes in and say's "I don't want to watch that". :( Have literally started Episode 1 about 4 or 5 times, have not yet finished.

I've caught a few YouTube bits: so I'm reading the novel again. Page 710 of 1152.

I have to say, based on just a few clips, that the actress playing Fujiko-san has the most wonderful facial expressions.

Possibly season 2:

I'm hoping so. I haven't read the books but when the show ended with them dragging the destroyed boat up to rebuild it and then scene end. I was kinda bummed. So hopefully there will be season 2 to see how everything plays out.
