I’ve been wanting to get a short (~4 inch) 22lr ar put together for my girls and after reading @BigWaylon ‘s posts as well as others I finally pulled the trigger.

My youngest girls are now 7 and 8 and have a hard time getting a good sight picture with most of my guns. It seems they are too heavy and the lop is also too long.

Being I have a 4 inch 22lr ar upper on the way I figured I’d put together a fresh pistol lower to go with it. My question is, being I don’t have to have a functioning buffer tube, what is the best option for getting the lop as short as possible for them but still be able to extend out for myself?

Pic rail adapter and something like the MCX/MPX collapsing stock.

I'd try this.

SB Tactical SBPDW / PDW01SB AR Brace?: https://www.familyfirearms.com/prod...r-brace-pdw-ar-platforms-black-elasto-polymer

They are fine folks to do business with and 100% legit; create an account and email them for an even lower price …

Using the upc to search nationwide shows pricing elsewhere, CONUS
(notes AVOID Defense Depot AT ALL costs;
DACK Outdoors is consistently lowest; however; they mean it when they say shipping may take up to 4 weeks!)

From what I've read those only go as short as a regular carbine stock for 5 times the cost.

I'd go with a knockoff SBA3, it's cheap and goes on a standard carbine tube and can be collapsed really short.

If y'all are anyway near me your kids are welcome to try my SBR to see how they like a tiny PDW 22lr with a short stock. I can pop the foregrip off and they can try the same lower with an SBA3 clone too.

AR pistol w knockoff SBA3

As you can see it's not long at all and that's not even closed all the way.

I was thinking… any gun short enough for a child is still shootable by an adult.

I was also thinking “how small are these girls?” My AR with a collapsed stock has a LOP of 10.5 inches. And you can easliy shave a inch off that with different stocks.

That CZ youth model has a LOP of 12 inches.

A buddy of mine bought the CZ Scout last year for his daughter. He is about 6’3” and 300+ lbs and he shoots it fine.

I just had my youngest come and hold a lower by itself and I do believe @Me. is on to something. I believe the stock fully collapsed is at an ok length. I think the real problem is the guns are too heavy for them. Must be from their mothers side of the family.

I’m still thinking about getting a shorter buffer tube and compact stock/brace. The one linked to kak looks to be about the cheapest although last week I stopped by point blank range and found a buffer tube for $1 in their bargain bin. I may try cutting it just to see and then cutting a shock wave blade down a little. Might work, might not, we shall see.

Thanks for all the advice fellas. I’ll definitely post pics when I get it all together and running.

Also, I got a couple pms from @NCLivingBrit , i hope this doesn’t turn in to a monstrosity.

I'd try this.
And make an unregistered SBR? 🤔

Why not just go with w Tippmann Arms or M&P 22 in pistol format with the brace? Both are light and can accommodate a very short LOP. While my preference is the Tippmann for its build quality and similarity to a 223 AR, the M&P 22 is lighter so perhaps is a better choice here. There are also some crazy lightweight 10-22 clones like the TacSol and Magnum Research variants. One of mine is like 3 lbs total. They use 10-22 stocks so there are plenty of short LOP options.

My boys don’t shoot anything semi auto as I prefer them to use bolt actions for a few reasons. The Savage Mark I/II GY models are perfect for them, as is the CZ scout.

Homemade 22 ARs or conversions are a no-go for me as theyre too quirky or unreliable in my experience.

Don’t know how many are on the market now. But S&W was making a M&P 15-22 pistol with a brace. Somewhere around 3.5 pounds. Here’s one without the brace.

Edited: here is one with a brace.

Upper arrived. It also came with the better mag adapter (I think it’s called) to use sw mags in a standard lower. It fits in my aero lower but I’m having problems in a psa lower. Might have to sand the mag well down a little.

Tonight my youngest and I put together a psa lower I had stashed for her. We function check it right before bed without the mag adapter and she was stoked.

I did notice that most of my ars have the a5 buffer tube and that adds a little length. Tonight we used a standard bu tube and it was a little shorter. I’m still going to pick up a shorter tube and cut a pistol blade down a little.

Thanks everyone for the links and ideas.

Also @Average Joe we have a mp15 22 rifle. It runs great but I was hoping for something to use with a standard lower.
