I just bought a new shotgun. A charles daly ca612. Its a 12ga inertia shotgun. I put 25 rounds of winchester 12ga 2 3/4 steel shot high velocity thro it. It would not function 100%. Most of the time it would only fire and almost eject the spent shell.

I put 5 rounds of winchester 3" buck shot thro it and it would function with that.

Does it just need more rounds through it?

Based solely on my experience with an Inertia is only my Benelli M1S90 I say break it down, clean all the factory stuff out and reassemble using a a good CLP. Inertia guns are usually very clean running guns, run a little cooler in the receiver area and actually don’t require major cleaning regiments or an over abundance of lubrication.

As to ammo ... high velocity steel should cycle ... even low brass field loads cycle in mine even back when I first bought it. When you manually operate the action it should be pretty smooth ... the first 1” to 1 1/4” should be lighter and the bolt should turn easy ... the rest of the operation should feel more of the spring but still smooth. Between a good clean & proper CLP lube and a little work you should be able to run high velocity reliably for sure ... and even low brass loads pretty damn well

Thanks guys for the input. I did clean it before I shot it. The bolt operates very smoothly. As for the manual I can not find a break in from the factory. I guess I will buy a box of high brass bird shot and see what that does.

As mentioned, a good and thorough cleaning of the internals, especially the recoil spring is needed. Then send at least 100 rds of heavy loads (min 1-1/8oz), at a minimum velocity of 1250fps. After that, your gun should reliably cycle with "lighter" loads.

I have an old Remington Sportsman hump back 16 gauge. The Sportsman model made under a Browning patent. It requires moving a friction ring in the forearm from one end of the spring to the other to shoot different shells. Place it at one end for low power shell and the opposite end for high power shell. Check the manual and see if this one says anything about that.
