I headed over to Woody's this afternoon when the thermometer topped 40F to do some quick shooting of my recently acquired 59/66 and the Mini 14. When I got there I realized I left the ammo bag behind in the garage!
A young man was there trying out his newly purchased AK47 and offered me a couple boxes of Wolf 7.62x39 gratis but I happily paid for them. The Mini 14 had to remain in its case sadly
I had started sighting in the SKS on a previous trip and finished the job today. With the Wolf ball at 100 yds from a rest I regularly got 2.5" groups and could have done better if I had been able to make out the target. The standard NRA 100 yd bull is just too small for my eyes these days. Interestingly some S&B ball I tried on the first shooting trip with the rifle got shotgun groups. Go figure.
I then tried it on the steel 550yd range and was able to get multiple strikes on the 200 yd plates. I didn't bother beyond that because the plates were just a blur.
The SKS came to the U.S. from Slovenia based on the maintenance log that came with the rifle. It is all matching and the log indicated that the bore had 95% remaining life when it was inspected in 2005.
I bought it on a whim. I've owned multiple Chinese SKSs from a VN bring-back through the commercial guns imported in the 80s as well as a Soviet rebuild and a Yugo 59 but this one is the most accurate of any of them. I'd hate to hump it all day long, it is heavy and unbalanced, but from a bench it is a great shooter.
A bad day turned into a good day thanks to the generosity of a young man with his new AK.
