The street price on these is sitting around $560 - and 5.7 ammo isn't disgusting at the moment. (<50cpr)
Figured it would be a good range toy, especially being able run a 22 can. If it proves reliable, I'd also move it to HD duty.
Not overly concerned with all the hype around armor pen, but have seen/heard good things about the round losing steam through drywall and construction materials.
The rotating barrel and a 22rd capacity is also a huge upside IMO.

Setting aside that it's a somewhat niche round (hopefully that changes since the number of 5.7 offerings has quintupled in the last 18 months) - my biggest concern is reliability.
There are quite a few reports of mag issues, but those seemed to have cooled off in the last few months. Did Smith make any changes that resolved that?
Also brings up, S&W customer service seems to be lacking compared to some other manufacturers. (Specifically, Ruger - since they've got the 5.7.)
The PSA Rock is a non-starter, since QA seems to be on par with a 90s era Kia.

So, am I nuts for wanting a meme caliber with an unproven (at least by S&W) action?

man i dont think you are nuts ive considered it many times but just havent pulled the trigger on one because of other guns on the wishlist . The round in interesting to me but balisticly im sure sure if it is any better than 9mm. ruger does have fantastic customer service so thats would give me some piece of mind to go with them because even if you did get a bad one you are almost guaranteed to end up with a reliable handgun. i havent personally delt with smith but for the most part they have a good track record and a big name so i would assume that they would fix any issues with the gun as well as issues with the ones they have already sold. if you do get one i would love to get a range report because they are super cool in my opinion.

@flip

i just acquired the M&P 5.7. I also own a PSA rock. Both are excellent pistols. The gas delayed rotating barrel system on the M&P is brilliant. It cycles incredibly smoothly, has even less recoil and mine runs 100% with and without a suppressor, whereas my rock won’t cycle with a can. If you’re interested in the M&P I think you’ll be pleased. The ergos on the rock are better but i prefer the trigger on the M&P. If you’re committed to the 5.7 cartridge, just get both!

@flip, I don't think you're nuts at all.

I'm interested in this pistol for a lot of the same reasons, with the bonus of having the nearly identical M&P 22 Magnum available as a trainer, using ammo that costs half as much. But that means buying two guns (where's that brick?).

Another reason for my interest is being 60, with random hand pain that probably won't get better with age. May as well get ahead of recoil management issues now, although the hand pain situation isn't associated with shooting yet.

If it's reliable enough, the thumb-safety version wouldn't be a bad carry gun for someone used to carrying big pistols. Kinda like carrying an ultralight 1911.

Seems like folks are starting to pay attention to the 5.7 lately - and not in a good way.

Garand Thumb and Lucky Gunner did a couple of videos in the past few days and just crapped all over it.
It seems like a hell of a round for a fun gun, but CPR is on par with 5.56 and 300. Especially when comparing 5.7 and 300 subs.

If S&W release the 22mag with a threaded barrel, that seems like a better range gun - but rimfire kind of sucks. :/

Yeah I saw Mike’s video and was honestly surprised how lackluster the 5.7 performed in his tests. I always thought 5.7 would be a step up from 9mm but in their tests that did not appear to be the case.

Honest Outlaw speaks very highly of the S&W 5.7. I really liked how it felt in-hand playing with it at the store. If I were to get a 5.7 that'd be the one I'd get. IMO it's the best 5.7 pistol option right now. The way it's set up makes a very good, very fast competition, home defense and even EDC pistol (long barrel, but narrow profile). I say go for it.
