So I, uhhhh.....I just did a thing....

I think it's more of an issue for us small users. I just need a little can to shoot my Hawken a bit but noone carries it locally and when I find it online the fees triple the cost.

I got some 777 iirc, but everything I read says it's not going to work well, even with the 209 primer adapter I have.
Triple 7 is fine, I’ve used it in those guns. Probably used more Triple 7 than black, no problems whatever.

I'll have to give it a go then. Thanks! All the forums I'd looked at did nothing but gripe about it and swear BP was the only way.

Since it seems that everybody loves a cannon, would you like to see Civil War artillery being shot in live fire competition? Ain't no wimpy reenactor blanks, we're talking real solid shot. Well then if so, step into my world for a while. I'm a North South Skirmish Association member and we shoot Civil War guns in competition and that INCLUDES artillery- guns and howitzers and mortars. Next live fire competition is 18-22 May in Winchester VA. Artillery is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Friday for mortars and Saturday for artillery. Visitors are welcome, there is no charge but you must register at the gate. As an added benefit for visiting, nearly every vendor of note dealing in Civil War/military black powder arms will be there, just a few, Dixie Gun Works, S&S, Lodgewood, Moose Molds and Regimental Quartermaster. In addition, those who need some powder, welllll, right at the exit to the range is Back Creek Gun Shop. Jackie is one of the best suppliers of the holy black and a true southern gentleman. Here's a bit of video for grins and giggles when the strings get pulled.....

Many of the mortars are originals. Note the "bell" ringing sound. That's from a brass Coehorn.

Some of our guys are the perps in this video. A couple crews get invited to Gettysburg to put on this demo every year.

And for the artillery-

This one was made by Tambi from Scheutzen. I'm actually in this one but just one of a cast of thousands.

And a couple stills for grins-

Second relay of the artillery match being staged to enter the range. Note the smoke from the 1st relay past the cars. The whole valley echos and rumbles while the match is going on.

Me, in the Glengarry and my son, newly retired USAF, serving on our 6lb rifled howitzer crew. Mike's at Position 1, I'm on Position 2. And yes, this is a full sized cannon. It was designed for rough terrain cavalry use. This pic and the next are from the last match of each year held in Statesville, NC. While not quite as large as Nationals, it still sees from 12-16 pieces being shot live.

IMG_4674-8-10.jpgThis is an image I did of a six pounder we owned at the golf club where I used to work. I want to say they got it from an outfit called Steed’s in Tenn? We fired the cannon after tournament dinners, which took place about 10 times annually. I believe the charge was approximately 1# of Goex with several pads of steel wool packed in front of it. It was always a crowd pleaser for guests. The neighbors on an adjacent island, not so much.

This is just plain AWESOME!

The guys I bought this one from said they've done the live fire thing at Civ War events and been certified on the Artillery range. I believe they said they had a 12 pounder out back for Civ War, but that one is a bit of a beast to drag around the field.

I unloaded this 3 by myself this morning when I got home.
