I'm thinking of getting a spotting scope. This would be for casual target shooting, so I'm not concerned about weight/size. 22lr at 50 yards, rifle calibers at 100/200/300 yards. Is there a spotting scope that can see groups at those distances? I'm getting old and wear glasses, so that's also a consideration. What do you recommend?

Most spotting scopes will have a focus adjustment. You can focus with, or without, glasses.

Up to 60x is nice for 300yds.

That said, my only wisdom I can impart is to try the scope at 100yds to see if you get double lines. A simple sign with black on white lettering should show it up. You need to see crisp edges, no double or blurred.

It took me 2 or 3 tries (I think) before I found one just under $200. Or you can just skip to top tier glass.

I just bought one ... intended to do substantially what you listed as intended purpose ... and it is scheduled to be delivered here tomorrow.

Hope you'll reply with a range report on what you bought and how it performed!

I bought a Bushnell recently. The optics are pretty good but the power adjustment is very stiff. It may loosen up with time. The plastic tripod is junk. Fortunately I have the metal tripod from my 70s vintage spotting scope which fits and works fine.

I have an Athlos 20-60x80 and it works great. Yeah…you’re not gonna be able to clearly see the hole of a gnat’s ass at 300, but it’ll do what you are looking for and do it pretty economically.

Have the same one and so far it works pretty well for my needs.

My kids got me a Gosky(China) for fathers day last year. It came with a cheapo tripod but I have a Slik tripod that it can be mounted to. I’ve been impressed with the clarity and have nothing negative to say about it.

That spotting scope I just bought from you guys just hours ago arrived in NC today. Amazing service, once again. Much appreciated.

It looks great, got a chance to set it up here and looked in the neighbor's windows examined a woodpecker high up in a 90' tall tree, will take it for a spin at the range tomorrow.

Okay, for those still watching ... the spotting scope is the Hawke Endurance ED 25-75x85 :

Tried it today at the 50 yard range, where I used it to help sight in a Holosun 407C on a Mark IV 22/45 Lite at 18 yards, and then to verify some fine adjustments on a CZ457 with 16x Sightron glass, at the full 50 yards available.

Very happy with it. Thanks, Camera Land!

It's really just like being right in front of the paper, no matter where I put the paper.
LOTS easier than waiting for the range to go cold! and safer than walking down there earlier than I should.

Glass is comparable to optics I have seen that are at the 'next price level' up.
Colors are sharp, and, the slightly larger objective lens does make a difference in the brightness at the max mag.

Better eye relief than I expected. That's important for me due to my needing glasses to correct astigmatism.
This model scope comes in a wraparound protective case that turns out is a much bigger plus than I suspected it might be.

Used an older, stouter-than-average camera tripod today.

Waiting for my Chippewa Stands support:

I am going to try and look at some planets with this, too, just for grins.
I have to wait until an ideal time, such as when it is dark out.

Looks like the close focus range and eye relief are both very impressive. The weight also looks good.

I talked with Scott today, and I'm leaning towards the Athlon Ares G2 20-60x85. That seems like a good entry point for getting started with spotting scopes. The other scope I've been considering is the Vortex Viper 20-60x85.

My advice would be to spend twice what you think you ought to on it.

I had a first one, (don't recall by whom) that I gave away to someone that just wanted to use it casually. I got gifted a 250 dollar one (mid/low upper tier Bushnell) one Christmas.

At this point, I've found both the ones I started with to be unsatisfactory for my needs and am looking Vortex Diamondback at the bare minimum.

@MrBitey this is the one I have. It was several hundred $ less when I grabbed it, so maybe not as good a value now. Works well at the distances at our club. Great glass. I originally bought it due to it’s smaller size. And because I wasn’t ready to drop $2k or more on a higher end scope. I can throw it in a pack and use it for things other than shooting. Bird or critter watching off the deck in the mountains has been about it so far.
