Springfield Armory Prodigy - 1911 DS - double stack 2011 style

I plan on calling some local shops after lunch!
I was trying to figure out what to buy myself for my birthday...

Only the grip module is plastic, and it's a modular, replaceable component in a standard 2011 gun. High end 2011s have used polymer grip components for a very long time.

OK, that makes me feel better. So its really more of a 2011 and not a 1911. I assumed since calling it a 1911 that it was a one piece frame and grip module. Probably going to end up with the 5" version of this one then.

Interested to see the price point on the mags and if they'll work in a Staccato.

1499$ without optic
1699$ with hex/dragonfly optic

Compatibility with staccato mags. This seems like a slam dunk price wise as long as they are reliable.

Honestly this is nothing new … in the early ‘90’s … 30 or so years back … Virgil Trip (master gunsmith) and Sandy Strayer (material and manufacturing genius) … got together to form STI outside of Austin and made a baby. I think their patent on the modular polymer frame was issued in ‘92 as their answer Para Ordinance’s wider double stack frames (because grip scales had to be attached on to the frame making the grip even wider). Stayer and Virgil left a few years later and STI evolved into Staccato.

I don’t know what patent things go here. Stayer and Virgil did retain patent rights after they left STI but how their agreements worked with STI and such was kinda private. The SA Prodigy sure seems to be a direct copy … especially with the mag compatibility ... so I gotta wonder what went on there.

There's a million 2011 makers out there.

The only new or exciting about this is that it is under 1500. Most being custom or semi-custom and much more expensive than even the STI/staccato.

I imagine after the dust settles so will the price. Willing to wager these will end up a few hundred less once the “i gotta have it first” crowd buys theirs
Hmmm, local shop is expecting to have 10 in stock Saturday morning.
Maybe I'll wait and let the "gotta have it" crew get theirs.

Go over and see what they look and feel like in person.
And see what they are going out the door for, if you can.

And a lot of those pistols are built by specialized shop using components from SVI/Infinity )started by Sandy Strayer and Mike Voight after Stayer left STI) along with a few other vendors. Again, I gotta wonder who SA brought in from STI/SVI/Staccato or whoever to lead the Prodigy line … the lineage is so strong it has to be something there.

I'll definitely be there Saturday morning to check it out.

Wilmington Sportsman's warehouse price is $1449 and claim it will be available in store on 9/12

Update-
I couldn't stand it!
I went ahead and ordered one at Sportsman's Warehouse.
Website says it will be available on/before 9/12

I'll definitely go check them out Saturday at Backwater Guns (Wilmington) and let you know what I think. FWIW :)

Good points man.

Had it not been for inflation, these would probably be a $1k street price. That would’ve been a very attractive reason for SA to jump into the 2011 game. This is likely a project that started a few years ago so I’d bet a dollar that was the case.

Guess we know whose a member of the gotta have it crew now 😝

I have to say that the magazine prices ($60) are not as obnoxious as I was expecting!!

My curiosity is certainly piqued. I have a Springfield 1911 in .45 APC that I got in the mid 2000's that I've been very pleased with. I've always wanted a STI 2011 but the $2k+ price tag kept it on the someday list.

Lots of reports that these have feeding problems. The mags are the weak point just like the early Staccatos and the old STIs. Duramag is the manufacturer IIRC.

I have now seen multiple people with non-T&E/non-review copies of these guns demonstrate major chamber dimension problems. Consistent extraction problems separate from the mag issues.

Whoever buys one, plunk it. If it doesn’t plunk, chamber’s short and needs finish reaming.

Personally, I'm holding out for one chambered in .30SC. 🤭

That was my thought too -- seems like SA is racing Sig to the bottom.

Not to get into full-on threaddrift, but the comparison that came to my mind was Cohen-era Kimber.

Replacing the legacy models with barely-distinguishable named models, making guns that look like “vintage” 80’s raceguns but are nonsensical (like tri-topping a slide but doing it from an oversized slide instead of tri-topping for the weight reduction), advertising all over magazine back covers, and rushing every new product to market with issues.

I handled one Saturday. Decent gun for the price. Too much trigger take up for my taste. Would def do a trigger job using EGW internals . Biggest drawback for me was the plates for the most popular optics aren't expected to be available until October. I declined on the purchase at this time. Maybe by the time the plates become available the hype will have died down a little
