SS tumbling?

Haven't even gotten my press set up yet but went ahead and bought the Frankford tumbler. I figure buy once cry once. Can't wait to get the stand for my press so I can deprime and start testing it all out.

I never decap before tumbling. Never even thought to try without the pins. I'm going to give it a go today and see how it turns out.

I cant tell a difference

Do the pins chew up the case mouths? I bought some cleaned brass and the mouths were all nicked up. I saw evidence of shells of some sort (walnut maybe).

Yesterday I posted in the "What Did You Do In The Loading Room Today," bragging on Toprudder's suggestion to use ArmorAll Wash & Wax instead of Dawn dish washing detergent in the tumbler drum. I reported that the first time I tried it, I wasn't all that excited, but THIS time, I was VERY pleased! I posted pictures of yesterday's brass.

Last night I put the new brass with the previous batch, and I now have 300 empty cases of 9 mm ready to load. I separate my brass into "sets" of 100 rounds, all of the same brand. I have 13 "sets" of 9 mm, each with 100 rounds in each "set," and rotate through them, shooting and reloading. I wrote a database in "Access" to keep track of each set.

My first attempt at using ArmorAll Wash & Wax was on set 907 (9 mm, set 07). Yesterday I tumbled sets 908 & 909. Here's pictures to show the difference. You decide for yourself.
index.php

Both "sets" are the EXACT SAME brass type - Winchester "White-Box, 9 mm Luger." The difference was, THIS time I used water as HOT as our faucet could muster. Everything was EXACTLY the same, except for the temperature of the water. Both batches used the ArmorAll Wash & Wax, SS pins, Lemishine, and both batches were tumbled in the same tumbler & drum for 90 minutes.

The "card" behind each batch is the "report" I generated with the database to accompany each "set" throughout it's "life" of that individual reload. The next time that "set" is reloaded, a new tag will be printed, with the "Times Fired" count incremented by one, and all the details of THAT reload will be included. I can also print a report for each "Set" giving the details of every time it was reloaded.

I just wanted y'all to see the difference that the water temperature made. In all fairness, I should probably tumble the next "set" with Dawn and HOT water.

BTW, Thanks again to Toprudder for the suggestion!

Wow!

I suspect you will get them as clean and maybe even as shiny with Dawn, but the difference will be seen later. Often, the Dawn washed brass would tarnish. I also noticed a problem with brass tending to stick to the expander (powder funnel on Dillon). Those problems went away with the Wash-n-wax.

Hey, I got something that works this well now, why should I even think about changing?

For those using the armor all alternative to dawn, is the quantity the same? Just a squirt of wash and wax?

When I wet tumble, I usually dry my cases on top of the wood stove in the basement. As weather warms up, no fire. So I use the clothes dryer. Ours has a
rack that hangs inside the door for drying shoes. I put the brass in cloth bags and use the door rack. Works great. Just don't put them in the spinning drum!

First tumble today...~1000 pieces of .40 brass, with SS pins, a squirt of Armor All W&W, a sprinkle of Lemishine, and hot water. Let it run a couple hours, and now it's all drying.
