We have a surplus of cardboard egg cartons, has anyone had success starting seeds using such?

I've considered it but my concern is that they are pretty shallow. But so are the store bought ones, although slightly deeper. If you give it a shot I would be sure to break them open when you plant them. Gives the roots a head start on spreading. I break any plantable containers I put in the ground first.

Also, the seed starting mixes are really terrible. I'm doing better this year with some screened soil mixed with the seed starting mix. The seed mixes don't really seem to hold water well. Adding some soil seems to help.

Next go around I'm making seed starters out of toilet paper rolls.
