We had 3 Deputies go to a house to serve a warrant last week. They were let into the house and didn't find the guy and left. So they went back a second time with info he was there and opened a hidden craw space door he was pointing a gun at the deputy but didn't fire. Well last stupid thing he will ever do.

One of my relatives was the trooper who was shot. He was hit just below the bottom edge of his vest but returned fire and punched the perps ticket permanently. At the time the trooper's wife was also about 7 months pregnant. He has pretty much recovered and is now a new dad and there's one less scumbag on the planet.

Oh, and it was an airsoft gun.

Interesting choice of headline.
“Trooper fatally shoots stranded driver who opened fire on him”

Why not say it chronically?
“Stranded driver opens fire on Trooper who stopped to help”
"Criminal shoots Trooper. FAFO."

Well if you are stupid enough to start what the other party thinks is a gunfight but don't have a gun, it's probably best for everyone if you get shot in the face.
Not the first time he's been shot by the police either.

Any word on why the guy shot the trooper in the first place?

Is that soft armor?
soft armor will stop penetration of just about everything a cop is likely to encounter. and a good deal of what they're not likely to encounter too.
but it's gonna hurt

Dead perp rap sheet...According to North Carolina records, Taylor only had traffic citations and violations. In October 2021, he was charged with an expired registration card/tag and an expired inspection. In February 2022, he pleaded guilty and responsible to those charges. Taylor was also charged with driving while impaired in 2012, which was dismissed by the district attorney in Buncombe County at the time, Ron Moore. In 2012, charges for an expired registration and driving under the influence were also dismissed by the DA.
In Kentucky, between 1984-1990, Taylor was found guilty of charges ranging from aggravated assault, fugitive warrants, forcible sex offenses, and burglary, for which he served time.

Saw two different troopers just a couple days after this happened, doing just that. Lots of respect for the folks who guard the kings roads solo.
If I get pulled over I'd much rather it was a trooper than a town cop. They are often way more reasonable.

My mind vascilates on my opinion of highway patrol. I respect their level of training and that they work isolated and by themselves. On the other hand... glorified traffic cops with a limited scope. I say this with having friends who were HP; one, a very good friend who died responding to a MVC. But I never, ever like see them injured or killed, and I do respect what they are often called to do.

I'm glad this ended up on the "right" side.

Recently NCSHP has taken a more proactive approach to responding to other stuff at least local to me. I had an assault call the other week that the Trooper showed up on. Deputy was 15 minutes out and Trooper got there first like 4 or 5 minutes after they gave the call out.

Also I have seen NCWRC Game wardens being more active on the roads. In fact just yesterday I saw one that stopped a car in a small country town, might have been Stokes County but I can’t remember for certain other than it was north of Greensboro somewhere.
