Is the AK platform (10.5" barrel, 7.62x39) worth a damn without some form of butt stock?

Just literally had the same conversation with the oldest son. He has a Draco and wants to SBR it. I told him if you want a SBR, get one built as one or one that doesn’t need the rear trunion reworked. So I recommended for him to wait another couple months to see how the whole brace thing works out. Then sell the Draco and purchase a SBR & file at that time. Or spend a bunch of extra cash to make his a true SBR.

Just sell it and get more night vision toys!! 👍🏻🤗
Most people SBR Dracos because they are military factory guns, so it's seen as worth the work. With a folding stock it's almost a clone correct PM mod 90.

That is good info and nice to know. Any recommendations on the trunion work?

I think DP doesn't work on them anymore, so no help from the forum. It's not super hard if you can press rivets. Just drill out the old ones, drop in a new rear trunnion and press in new rivets.
I know Victory Arms in Mocksville builds AK's, they could likely do it.

Look, Tim. I'll help you out in light of the latest ATF fudgery. You can remove the stock from the Carolina Hammer, I'll buy it off you, and then I will purchase the stock from you in a completely unrelated transaction to use for airsoft purposes. I will take it to the local indoor range where hopefully a fedboi can watch me bumpfire the thing from my hip while I emphasize to him how this would have been WAY safer if I could have just shouldered the thing like before.

Do you wring every bit of accuracy from an AK pistol? no. Are they as pleasant to shoot without a stock as with? no. Are they hard to shoot? no, especially with a dot. I may SBR my M92 someday, but then I never bothered with a brace cause it was too much hassle.

Deal. PM me for where to send the funds.

922R is a directive for importers to follow before they send the firearm off to distributors. It applies to any rifle imported into the USA. Hammers use USA made receivers and were never imported, hence 922R doesn't apply.

If you been looking to purchase or modify an imported firearm, there’s a good chance that you’ve heard about 922r or 922r Compliance. There’s also a chance that you may not know what 922r is nor how to have a 922r compliant firearm.

We’ve got some bad news and some good news.

First, the bad news. 922r compliance can be a little complicated.

Second, the good news. After you’ve read this article, you know everything that you need to know about 922r and you’ll see that it’s not that hard to be 922r compliant with your firearm.

WHAT IS 922R?

When someone mentions “922r,” they’re referring to a section of federal law governing imported rifles and shotguns. Note: 922r does not apply to handguns.

Kalashnikov USA sells factory SBR’s. Curious what advantages other than factory built vs bubba built there are? Easier to get the tax stamp?

Less work to buy a complete firearm from KUSA, but KUSA has a pretty unconvincing track record with QC recently.

Thanks! Wasn't sure what the origins were on several of the hard parts.

Member here @wired can do a conversion to an underfolder. He just did my ZPAP M85 yesterday. I don't have it back yet but a picture is included below. Apex Gun Parts and AK Options both have the parts required (UF stock, stock parts, different selector if it is a Yugo AK). Seems like a good option to me. Mine wasn't a recent "free stamp" gun. I SBR'd it a few years ago but never got around to changing out the AR tube/AR stock until I found him here. IMO is AK is truly awful with AR buffer tubes and stocks, but YMMV.

Most overlooked fact in all of this is that the USSR had moved to 5.45 cartridges before it started issuing AK platform rifles with sub-16" barrels. If you've ever shot 7.62x39 out of a 10" barrel you'll understand why. I love AKs but if I were going to SBR one it would not be in 7.62.

Also make sure to check out the AK buyer's guide before selecting a manufacturer.

But to keep answer the op question, ak pistol sucks without some kind of connection to the shoulder. The pistol brace coming onto the scene is what made them jump from $500 guns to $1000 guns, they are in their way back down now.

Braces make all the difference. The nice thing about the imported ak pistols is they aren't required to follow 922r so they are entirely imported. Very good quality in most instances. Throw a brace on it or SBR and have a very nice rifle. My issue with them is mostly even in SBR for they are super impractical other than being small and compact. If you ever need to use it you will be blind and deaf on the first couple shots. I lean towards normal length rifles for this reason alone.
