Gah! I HATED those windbreakers. Looked like something a 75 year old Granny / mall walker would wear. Fortunately most of the units I served with ditched them and we had unit sweatshirts (not hoodies). Seriously-- I wanted to burn that oversized trash bag with a zipper... Wearing that thing for a conditioning foot march was terrible. Wearing that thing going through an obstacle course? No-fecking-way.
Sorry man, other than the dumb-f-u-c-k-ing black beret fiasco, that was the worst uniform item the Army issued, in my opinion.
We never got to do rucks or obstacle courses in PTs. Always BDUs & boots, add ruck & dome of obedience as necessary. The new PTs were way better for PT, IMO. We PT'd in the cold & the wet & they beat the hell out of having 30lbs of wet cotton sweats trying to fall off & blocking zero wind.
Don't get me started on the beret. Hated that piece of headgear. I got no dog in the fight, but thought it was shitty for Shalikashvili to take the Rangers' beret from 'em. Had the misfortune of wearing a red one for half my career. Absolutely worthless headgear. It might look pretty in your A's, but it was hot in the summer & didn't keep the sun out of yer eyes, provided zero warmth in the winter & smelled like a dead sheep when it got wet.
