I just picked up an old model blackhawk yesterday. 6.5" in wonderful condition. Tried some 38sp loads I had in it and it shoots better than I can.
Had time to load some 357 today. They drop in fine. All except the last .135". Sure enough it's a 38sp chamber.
Anybody know if a blackhawk, sn 30-54xxx range was offered like this? It looks to be a factory cylinder. Maybe a rechambered 9mm? Throats are .357".
I have always had new models. This is my first 3 screw, so I don't know much about them. The frame is marked 357 cal.

Thats strange. I hope you get it figure out and its a simple fix.

Got pics? Sounds like a nice conversion.

What does it say on the side? Scrub out the chambers real thoroughly and see if you can put a 357 round in all the way. I had the experience georgel mentioned in two 357 Mag revolvers that had been used with lots of 38 Special ammo. It took some heavy scrubbing to get out the rings in the chambers.

He said it was marked .357, which is one reason I suspected chamber buildup. I've had a similar experience and it's sometimes hard to notice.
Also, I can't see a reason why it would be chambered for .38 only

It's clean, but very tight chambered. I had to change from the Lee size die to a tighter RCBS I use in the Freedom Arms' 353. Also had to load a 150swc. Anything else hits the throat. Sending the cylinder to Fermin Garza to be done.

Ruger would probably handle it at no-cost. They have done work on old firearms that I acquired 2nd hand that had issues for only the cost of the shipping.

Ruger will want the whole gun & would most likely "update" it as well.
I agree - don’t send it to Ruger unless you want it converted to transfer bar (I wouldn’t). My understanding is that they will not work on it without converting it.

As sweet as the trigger is now, I really wouldn't want it converted. Plus Fermin does excellent work. If I do have to send it to Ruger, I'll pull the parts and keep them first.

Ruger did offer the older models with extra cylinders for the 357 frames . I have a 9mm cyl I picked up some where in a box of Ruger stuff with several stock Ruger grips .
