Subaru WRX thoughts??

Wife bought a 14 Sti new, life happened and now she’s rocking a 15 wrx. No troubles out of either besides a clutch in the 15.

Wrx’s are no where near as fun as STI’s, but if your new to them altogether, you won’t know what you’re missing.

If you mod them (or beat on them) expect headgasket troubles. And then expect to catch hell finding someone to fix it.

If my wife drove hers like I would, I expect we’d have had more issues by now.

Have a 2021 model that I bought at the end of 2022. I really enjoy the car, which will out perform most cars on the road.

It may be the way I drive it, but it seems to accelerate a little slower in 1st and 2nd, but then will easily overtake in 3rd.

New enough that I haven't had repair issues, yet, but then again that is a good thing.

I have heard that earlier models had a head gasket issue, but supposedly that was addressed a few years ago.

Co worker has the 22 sti. Thing is very fast. He loves it! Tells anybody that will listen how great it is. He had the 21 until someone hit it and he traded it in.

My brother has a 12' or 14' he bought new that he loves. I like it because hatchback. He was in the Air force (air ng now) so it has been all over the country taking him to wherever he was assigned.

I've never been in it now that I think of it. But to my knowledge it's never had a misstep. He is an OCD airplane mechanic but over the years is always asking me questions about this typical repair or that upgrade.

His upgrades are for sure "mild" but it has around 130k on it and he does engage in spirited driving. But I think that's why it so reliable. Max upgrades and max hoonage are a recipe for a short vehicle life regardless of brand.

Biggest issue I know of was he convinced himself it needed a clutch and wanted a "performance" upgrade. With me telling him he won't like it as it will affect day to day driveability.

Went down and helped him replace it (130k stocker was in fine shape😂) But now he whines about how touchy it is for the commute unless he's being aggressive. Get to tease him about being right😎.

Big brother knows things because he has experienced things🤣

I had an 08 Impreza base and 13 WRX hatch.

The Impreza base was fun but clearly under powered and the auto sucked. But it served the purpose of a cheap new vehicle.

The WRX solved both problems perfectly. That car was incredibly fun to drive! It wasn’t the fastest car on the road but it sure felt like it. The stock Dunlop tires were pretty mediocre but some BFG UHPAS tires made a noticeable difference in handling and confidence. My only regret is not tuning it.

It is not the way you're driving it. I had one and 0-60 mini vans were leaving me till boost kicked.

Ive owned 4 subarus in my life time. Solid fun and practical cars. Be prepared to have flat billed hat teenagers chatting you up. 2004 wrx, 2007 STI, 2009 STI Hatch, 2015 WRX.

Let’s just say on the way home, once I hit the country road this evening I probably averaged between 70 and 80 and in one good flat stretch had it up to 95 mph. It will go, in 6th gear from 60 to 70 in 4 seconds and 70 to 80 in 2 seconds (closer to max power at 5250 rpm).

Funny how that works, 1st gear is good to about 20-25 mph but then it takes a couple seconds to shift to second, which does better. For some reason, it really seems to kick it in 3rd gear, which you can push to about 75mph if you run to the higher RPM range. Interestingly 4th begins to be overdrive at a .96 gear ratio I believe it is. Still at higher speeds, e.g. 55 most cars can’t out accelerate you making it easy to get around or pass them.

edit to add: you can feel it push you back in the seat and feel the angular acceleration on curves when you take them at 2x the recommended speed and still stay in your lane.

If you have wide shoulders or lats, be prepared to be very uncomfortable. I was ready to buy one in 2018, and couldn’t fit in it. The bolsters on the buckets were stabbing me so badly my back could barely touch the seat back.

Did you just make a case for a CFF country roads spirited cruise?

My neighbor is a mechanic and a subaru junky. He used to rally race around the south east. I once asked him about head gaskets. He said it was when not if they would fail. Just a weakness in their boxer engine design. He can change them without removing the engine, which is step one for most shops.

Been looking at the 2020 & 2021. It's supposed to be well sorted and I think it's great looking. Looks better than new one.

I've heard a new map tune fixes that low gear hesitation.

Thanks for responses.

Have an Outback I love but having a mid-life crises and thinking of something a little funner. Also looking at BRZ/GR86, miatas, and some others.

Absolutely stay away from the GR86/BRZ. Tons of engine failures on spirited driving.

Required viewing for all Subaru Snobs! :D

I have a 2010 Outback 2.5 H4 at 180K on the clock and all the Outback 'quirks'..... And I love it.

Oh, Launch Control is on Amazon Prime, in 4K. Best watched on a large screen with respectable volume as well. 😁

The biggest down side is that the WRX ad STI are the most expensive cars to insure relative to the car value. They hold the record for % that are totaled in crashes.

There was a time when admitting to speeding on public roads was frowned on here. 🙂

I never speed on public roads, especially on my motorcycle, and I always put the seat down.
Would never even THINK about a pass on the DY.

What kind of horrible person does this kind of thing?
