looking at a 2005 Subaru outback LL bean 3.0l 6 cylinder with 150,000 miles to replace totaled minivan. From what I understand the 3.0 had timing chains and did not have the head gasket issues they want $3800 any thought and what to look for. We have a 2022 2.5l outback that we love

I regularly watch this guy for issues to look out for.

I bought a 2003 LL Bean Outback from a neighbor around 10 years ago. They gave it to me super cheap because they thought there were major problems with it after towing it to the dealership. It had issues starting sometimes and the dealership told them they had electrical issues that would probably cost thousands to fix. I told them I thought it was just a starter. I even questioned them when they said I could have it for $700.

I came over the next weekend to get it and they said it wouldn't start again. Popped the hood, tapped on the starter and it cranked up. I asked them one more time if they were sure they wanted to sell it. They were over the vehicle and being stranded. I drove straight over to NAPA, bought a starter and changed it that afternoon. Ended up being a fantastic vehicle for the two years we kept it. It was an extra vehicle and my wife was sad to see it go since she liked it better than her huge Sequoia we still have. I think I got $5500 for it back then with 220k on it.

I’ve got a 07 LL Bean with 254k. Still running strong. Valve cover gasket and an O ring behind the filter housing is all I’ve done to it. It’s got a slight leak on the front cover but not enough for me to deal with that problem. Everything has held up good enough to the point if the engine goes I’ll probably rebuild it and try to get another 300k out of it.

Even if you get a year or two out of it, you’ve done pretty well. I’d go for it if nothing is obviously wrong.

Reactions: Me.
Funny. I’ve been looking at older outback’s myself, and I want to say I even looked at the one you’re referring to. I have two 2.5 Subarus that I love and am tempted by their 6 cylinder. At that price I’d go for it.
