What's a cheap and easy way to hang a 20"x12" steel target? I'm thinking something like a wood sawhorse with chain to limit the legs opening and the legs to be hinged for easy storage.

Any ideas?

I've looked at getting some of the last stand kits, but I don't know if one would hold that large of a plate

2x4s and a couple joists would seem to work well. For my smaller targets. 4'x2' I use the black iron pipe from lowes and screw flanges at the bottom. It holds up pretty well even to driest hits

Keep in mind, that plate's gonna weigh 26 pounds (assuming it is 3/8" AR 500) plus the chain and any other hardware. You really need it to be portable? That thing is likely to have a good bit of inertia when you hit it with any serious rounds.

Works fine with 9mm. Haven't tried rifle rounds on it yet.

Ya it's probably not going to be portable. Think I'm going to make it wide on the bottom ( leg width) to help it stay upright.

I built some late last year. Only had them out once so far. 2x4s and the sawhorse brackets. Targets range from 4"x6" to 14"x18" (or maybe its 16"x18", can't remember). All 1/2" AR500.

Easy to repair if needed.

I think his neighbors must get armed!

Here's a idea for a stand I've been using for a while my father in law came up with. Easy to set up and store in the trunk of the car. We heated the ends of the two vertical pieces of rebar and bent then into circles so I could run the horizontal piece through both. Pretty sturdy and cheap to make. Wanted to post earlier but couldn't find a picture but looks like you're on the right track. Happy shooting.

What's a easy way to cut thick chain? All I have is air cut off wheels and it takes 20 min to cut through one time...

When I looked at the price of a bolt cutter big and strong enough to do the job (and last), I decided on lightweight chain that I cut with a "normal" bolt cutter. I know it will need to be replace more frequently but it is cheap and easy to use. I only have one plate that needed a serious chain. For that one, I had Home Depot cut me a piece longer than I needed. Since my chain is hanging from open hooks, I can easily adjust the height. I also use little little when I need to add length. They're about 65 cents each.

I formed a "U" out of rebar and welded a couple of steps on the sides to drive it into the ground with. then hung the chain from that.

Lowe's and I assume home depot both have chain and will cut it for you. It's actually a lot cheaper than I expected.

Just bring your chain to a Home Depot and we will cut it for you no charge.

I just use a bolt/nut/washer and a metal fence post. Drill one of the holes to fit the bolt. Pound the post into the ground (I have one of those commercial pipes with the handles) and bolt it on. So far they have held up for over a year. They are getting dinged a bit, but for the money I have invested (less than a McD meal) who cares?

The CTS topper is what I use for my gongs:

Fits cheap 2x4s like a glove. The hook itself is made of AR500 steel and takes a beating. CTS also makes a pointed stake for the board bottoms, but I just cut a 2x4 in half at a 45-degree angle...easy to hammer the angled end into the ground and put this on the top.

For $20, this thing has held up remarkably well after probably a thousand rounds and even a few direct hits, and I will buy another one if it ever gets shot out.

I have 2 14"x19" plates and 3 8"x8" plates. They are not ar500 just tool steel but they were given to me. Also they are 3/4" thick so I think they will be ok for a while with just the handguns ( 9mm and 22lr, not rifle).

The problem I have been having is my side grinder is a odd size, takes 1/4" shank wheels. Can't seem to find the cut off wheels for it. So I guess I'm stuck with my pneumatic cut off wheel for the chain :)
