Having moved here recently, I got my temp Driver License today. It says it’s “valid for driving purposes only”. What does that mean? I have to wait till my permanent license arrives in the mail? I assume the temp license is no good as ID for other purposes? Hmm …

It's just not official ID for stuff that you would have to use official ID for. It gives the cops a way to run your info if pulled over and reasonably decide if it's really you. It shouldn't take too long to receive the official DL usable for other ID purposes. When I first moved here they issued at the DMV so I never went through that. Did you get a paper one? The real one has anti counterfeiting features.

I renewed online because I don't care about the pic and got a printable document. I got my renewed license before I would have needed to carry the document. Less than two weeks. It's not like the CHP process!

The DMV office used to print out the real ones. Raleigh decided they wanted to control that process. Cost cutting? Anti counterfeit? Some reason or other. So now you get the temp until you receive the real one in the mail.

Yeah, PITA I guess. The real deal comes from Raleigh now.

I have to amend my post above....my one previous to the current required had the pic wear off and I had to go get a new pic done. I did get a paper one. Still it didn't take too long. They issue for 8 years.

This switch happened a few years ago after a fairly significant ID fraud ring got busted. They used to give you the license that day at the license office. The current system makes it much harder to get fake ID's made.

Add in the Real ID thing now. They cannot be photo copied. I tried that for mine to submit to someone, and it came back all blacked out and completely useless.
Try taking a photo then print the photo

If I remember correctly some wasn't a machine and supies stolen and used to churn out fakes?

I vaguely remember some 'after hours' work being done but could be thinking of something else.

The new license has lots of hard to see and or hidden features to make it hard to counterfeit. Some take high power magnification. Some different light and angles.

The Real ID's are another level of validation, which I believe meet a nationwide standard and are required for flying. My wife had let her's lapse and we moved states, so it was like starting over. She to submit copies of previous marriage and divorce documents to track her last name changes. I remember thinking this is the foundation of a national ID system.

?

I’ve photocopied mine several times and it was clear.

Thanks guys. Only time will tell how long the state takes to get mine to me. I fly quite a bit and bet the temporary along with my old state ID won’t get me through TSA.
if your old state ID isn't expired yet, just use that. they probably won't know the difference
or declare you don't have an ID and sign the affidavit.

I just had to renew my DL on Oct 6th. They gave me the printed out copy and my new one took 2 weeks exactly to come from Raleigh.

I have to add, I made an appointment for that prior. It was by far the best DMV experience I've had in the 30 + years of having a DL. I was in and out in 7 minutes.
