I have been following this area since the move. Y'all have inspired me to go ahead and jump in. I started studying on 12/25 and I'm testing Sunday 1/8. I hope to take all three tests and expect to walk away with a general license. So thanks for stoking the fire going on in here.

which one? 145.210 MHz? That's a pretty popular one, especially around commute and lunch times.

Yeah that's it. The SWARC that uses it as "home base" is the club that administers the exam session Sunday. I tried punching in the JARS 2M repeater at 147.270 but I haven't heard anything on it, either there's no traffic or I may be out of range with this rubber duck.

BTW I think your new property is near me, maybe we can meet up some time.

Your HT will probably hear the JARS repeater well, it just may not have enough power to transmit to it, depending on where you are, obstructions, etc.

I'll keep listening & see if I can pick it up. Do they run a scheduled net on it?

Cape Fear have you downloaded the repeaterbook app to your phone or computer yet?

I downloaded the app to my phone (android) at your suggestion here but I haven't figured out how to use it. It can't figure out where I am and I have tried punching in my city, county and zip code with no luck on any of them. I'll keep messing with it.

Yes, at 8:30p each evening. Tonight is the trader net at 9pm.

From their website...
  • Every Night @ 8:30pm - JarsNet - Nightly Rag-Chew @ 147.270 Mhz
  • Every Tuesday Night @ 9pm - Jars Preparedness Net
  • Every Wednesday Night @ 9pm - JARS Trader's Net

Do you have location services turned on in the phone? It should locate you via gps. Mine does.

Yep that was the problem. I had to turn location services on, I usually keep it turned off. After it got a fix I turned location back off & the repeaters were still visible so that works.

I picked up some traffic after I posted above. I'll listen in on the nets tonight.

I listen to the 147.270 (JARS) and 145.210 quite a bit. They are both on the WRAL tower in Garner. I can hit them both easily inside the house from Smithfield on my Bfeng.

It's usually spotty during the day when everyone is at work.

The .210 is probably the most active repeater in the area, followed by the .27 JARS machine.

Just remember most of the users on .210 are n00bies... that's neither good nor bad, but it's a good fact to know while evaluating radio theory you might here there :) .

2m FM is a very small segment of the hobby, though it can be a lot of fun and a good way to meet locals.

That's what makes it a hobby that's worth sticking with...there's always something new to learn or try.

Only regular nets that I can get at my home qt. is 146.610 (greenville, sc) and 145.190 (mt mitchell)...They are both 9pm every night. Greenville (BRARS) has a swap net every wednesday night.

I told Noway that the JARS repeater had a more reserved and older crowd while the .210 repeater seemed to be more laid back and funny.\

I like both but honestly I am into HF mentally now LOL

Snal, I get BRARS now. They've got a big footprint though. Sending you a PM.

CFARS repeater on is 146.910. They run the Possum Trot net from 0530-0700 and a nightly net at 1900 should you find yourself close to Cumberland Co.

If I'm reading this right, the 147.270 (JARS) is s simplex repeater? Xmit, wait, and it's rebroadcast? I can see where this would appeal to a more mature crowd.

Me too... I listen to 2m when I'm working at the bench, but HF has always been where it's at for me.

"Mature" might be a strong word...older maybe :)

.27 is the output frequency

Not that I know of. If it is I did not realize it.

It has an offset so I believe it to be a standard repeater.

Roger on that. Amateur radio certainly has its share of Immature radio :)

Ok, now I pulled it up in repeater book and it shows an offset with no tone. When I looked at it on an apparently out if date website, it said it was a CSQ (simplex) repeater.

Yeah I don't even have a license yet and I'm already wanting to get into NVIS. I didn't even realize it until noway2 pointed out until yesterday that I don't have a radio that will do the right frequencies.

Guy on .210 this morning was giving the play by play as driving in to work this morning. Stuff like "this guy needs to get out of my way" and such. LOL

Yeah apparently they had a member of their community in an accident and surgery, and they were working together last night to get him everything he needed in post-op recovery. That was pretty cool, and made me feel good about their sense of community. Then there were some people who just loved to hear their own voice, and they droned on. I guess 2M is going to be like most internet forums huh?

Like I said upthread SWARC's VEs put together the exam I'm scheduled for Sunday so the only way I know to find out if it gets rescheduled for weather is by monitoring .210 so I'll be listening.

It can be hard sometimes to get a word in edgewise on there. I heard this discussion and was going to suggest a glass mount if he was by the window, but didn't even get a chance. A lot of times you just hsvr to jump in and then you don't know if you even got through or if you doubled with someone else unless you get a response. I try to be courteous and leave a gap for others to break in, especially if I know someone is on echo link.

This morning, the VEC in my area mentioned having someone sign up to test on the 14th. I mentioned you, but not by name, as someone thst decided to take the plunge after reading on this forum, and he thought that was great news.

There is a long drawn out weather discussion going on right now on .270.

Ha ha that reminds me of the old-timers sitting on the front porch of the general store with their Coke & peanuts or RC & Moon Pie. In overalls of course.

Where do they test? If the exam close to my house is cancelled Sunday the next event at the same venue is next month. I'm ready to get the testing behind me, I have too many hours of study in it at this point to wait another month to test - I'll never retain all the info for a month, and I dang sure can't afford to keep right on studying.
