One of my old shipmates amuses me to no end when he gets p*ssed off at me on the Book of Faces.
The funny part to me is that he accuses me of being EXACTLY what he, himself, is. He sets himself up for this by interjecting into conversations and then gets royally peeved when someone DARES to disagree with him on something.
Heck, you can even AGREE with him on all major points, and he'll STILL be royally p*ssed...and then "sign off" in a huff over it.
The latest was over this posted meme by another mutual friend to which I posted my own comment:
ME: What happened in Flint was stupid beyond belief on a variety of levels.
But I'm a bit tired of people beating a dead horse over it, now.
Flint's water quality was restored to acceptable levels in 2017. And they've undertaken a pretty massive task of replacing the water piping containing lead...which is still in progress.
So they HAVE clean water. And they're actively modernizing their water piping. They just have a lack of trust issue right now.
CB: Can you blame them for not trusting their local, state or federal governments?
ME: Nope. Not at all.
BUT...they can easily have their own water tested by an accredited lab. More than one neighbor can go in together to reduce the individual cost, too, if it's too much to pay alone.
CB: Yes of course they can and should, BUT-they shouldn't have to. It's not too much to ask that their water meet basic quality standards, and their government broke faith with them for far too long. If I lived in Flint, I would likely never trust a government official ever again. You might be tired of hearing about it, but if you were in the shoes of the average Flint resident, you might feel different.
ME: Well...we can all argue the "shouldn't have to" until the cows come home, but that doesn't change the fact that they do have to deal with that lack of trust. Trust violated isn't regained overnight, we both know this.
The claims are that the water meets standards now...and has since what...2017 sometime?
CB: You're missing the point. It's not whether it has been brought into standards, rather there has been a criminal lack of accountability for those who allowed this to get as bad as it was. That's why it needs to be brought up again- and again. Officials should have been jailed for this, and very little happened to them.
ME: No, that's YOUR point. The point of the meme was, quite literally, "...we can't get clean water pipes under Flint."
It wasn't about accountability.
And yes...they should be held accountable.
CB: Jesus Christ man, you just have to be right and have the last word, don't you! Fine- you win. I'm done.
ME: You know, I'm not the one arguing here...I made a comment about the meme posted, you chose to get in on that.
And if you'll note, I totally agreed with what you posted initially.
These people HAVE a trust problem. There ARE ways to work through that.
