The Last of Us

Just watched the ep with my wife. Last night I only saw 3/4 of it, to the 'bloater'
Welp, I didnt see that ending coming. Geez.

I figured that our new friends would be regulars.

That episode 5. oof.

As for all the gay of episode 3: totally unnecessary, but very well done. Not sure why the most character development of the season so far is 2 guys that didn't make it out of their own one episode, and I see that as a lot of pandering. It's wasted storytelling to focus that much on people that have no future in the series. but everybody has to pander to show how woke they are.

I was mostly disappointed because I hoped ol Ron Swanson was gonna be in it for more than an episode. He cracks me up.

I think the Walking Dead shows have spoiled me on character development.
I was thinking about this last night - only two people have made three shows or more.
Here's a rowdy crew in KC! Ooops, they dead.
Here's some allies! Dead.
Hey can you help me out, Im important, Im a firefly. ...never mentioned again.

So theyre leaving KC. Will we see a 'bloater' again? Are there more of them?
It's just a very different show than the others that deal with zombies.

No posts about last night's episode?

I liked the cameo by the guy in the beginning. He was in Die Hard 3 and Maverick (Mel Gibson, not the fighter jet movie ha). I like him, good to see him get some work.

So Tommy went from damn-the-man to 'COMMUNISM WORKS!'??
Place looks nice, but Im sure there are skeletons hidden (both figuratively and literally) in the closet.
But we, it seems, wont find out. They gone. Keep going.

And Joel has a heart. Weird concept.
And a gut wound.
Ah crap, I think he's gone.

(sorry, typing all of this as I watch)

Dont think so?
He had some health issues throughout. Falling off the horse, unresponsive, seems big.

Idk never played the game. Not sure how long he lasts 🤷🏻‍♂️

Interesting episode.

The downside is that they left out a lot of really good game content, and continue to deviate slightly (e.g. Joel gets stabbed by hunters in the show, but takes a fall onto a piece of rebar in the game, and the dam/Jackson sequence and focus was different). Depending on how next week goes, expect one or more full-blown Ellie episodes. The previews for next week show what is effectively the Ellie origin story, but then there is also a lengthy solo Ellie run in the game as well that takes place during this point in the timeline. I do believe we saw an easter egg for season 2, in that I believe the girl who was spying on Ellie and Joel in Jackson will be one of the main characters from the second game.

As expected, we got the Ellie origins story. Was glad to see a bit better acting in this one out of Bella Ramsey/Ellie, though the girls who were cast to play both Sara in Ep. 1 and Riley in this episode both nailed it.

There's not too much to say about this one other than the fact that it stayed very true to the game, albeit with a few more or less irrelevant things cut back for time. The carousel, arcade, Halloween store, were all derived straight from the source material.

Looks like we have two episodes left in the season. The episode 8 preview seems like it is going to introduce us to David and his gang - which, if they follow the source material, should make for some quality viewing if you enjoy some gore and psychopaths as part of your viewing experience.

I still have concerns with how they are going to age up Ellie for season 2 of this show. Granted, I have a feeling its going to be a good two years before we see a second season, but Ellie is a good bit older/taller in the second game, and the actor is already 19 years old, so they're not going to be saved by a growth spurt. Hopefully the makeup effects team does a good job.

I started watching this against my better judgment, hoping it wouldn't suck or veer off course. Didn't take too long figuring out I was wrong. I wasn't familiar with Pedro Pascal (Joel) before this, but think he's a great actor. Bella Ramsey (Ellie) is also great; I was surprised to learn she's British since she is able to conceal her accent so well.

Things began going off course with Bill running out into the open (with a bolt action no less) during an attack by a larger force; and he gets shot (imagine that).

The whole 3rd episode was character development for two dudes who don't make it past the episode.

4th episode, Joel tries driving through the middle of Kansas City (not even a good idea present day, much less after SHTF) and subsequently loses everything that Bill worked so hard to accumulate.

Episodes 4 and 5 are character development for several more people who don't make it past episode 5 (Kathleen, Perry, Henry, Sam).

Joel the badass gets stabbed in episode 7.

Episode 8 spends the whole time building up to 14 yo Ellie's kiss with Riley.

At this point in the series, the infected have played a role in what, half of the episodes, and minor roles at that? Becoming obvious this is just another woke whackjob.

Spoiler

He won’t die till season 2 based on the game.

What the rest of this season will be about is, after she gets medicine for him, she’ll be kidnapped by the leader of the group they killed at the hospital.

Joel will rescue her and they will find the fireflies.

I won’t tell you what happens with the vaccine.

I agree completely on building up people who are quickly gone, a complaint I had a week or so ago.

DONT! ha
i was glad to see him still alive last night (when we watched Sunday's ep), hoping he sticks around longer.

Not a gamer here, but as just your average boomer luddite, this show is really kind of losing my interest. My hours on this Earth are numbered and I flushed the better part of one right down the crapper with that last episode.

YMMV.

Pretty good episode tonight!

I thought so too. This episode stayed largely faithful to the game with a few exceptions that didn't make a huge difference. E.g. - in the game, Ellie isn't immediately captured, but does end up locked in the cage after being captured at the resort, and if I recall, Ellie's discovery of the cannibalism was a bit more graphic. Even the final scene with David was pretty true to the game.

I did appreciate how we really get a feel for Ellie's propensity for violence with her hack job at the end, as well as the irony of the penicillin saving Joel's life from infection.

One episode left in Season 1.

Just watched.
My complaints with the series remain the same - Hey, here's a new character...oopsy, they done.
Ellie and Joel are the only two that have been in two episodes (others have, technically, but usually only very briefly in one; like when we meet the black brothers at end of one and then a full ep, his brother in beginning of ep1 and then returns in a later ep etc)

But this was what I wanted in this episode - drama, intense, violence.
I was curious, though - could Ellie have infected him?

PS - I read that the character playing Ellie was not recast for S2 due to age differences. I guess following the game it's several years later, I dont know...I dont really care, either. I just want a good series.

I’m surprised. The actress is 19 and looks older when not made to look young.

She’s playing a 12-13 year old.

There’s a 4 year gap between season 1 and 2 which would put the actress’s real age in line with the character.

My only guess is that they want to show a visible aging with an increase in height.

I’m curious how they’ll pack everything that’s left in the final episode. It must be 3 hours long.

okay, okay i guess i don't understand english and modern times
if the actress goes by "she/they" ,which the author acknowledges in the article, why does the author keep referring to bella as "they" instead of "she"? "they're" is just more confusing than "she's" for a single person who identifies as both she and they.

is it now offensive to refer to somebody by a preferred gendered pronoun when a different pereferred, but non-gendered, pronoun can be used?

I know this is a lot of drift for the thread, but what the heck?

I’m still on the fence about watching this show but this thread is helping me decide if I want to bother.
I refuse to participate in the redefining of our language if for no other reason that “they” is plural and “she” is singular. Tired of this crowd that keeps making sh$@ up to appease their mental illness.

Tonight is the finale. It's only 9 episodes for Season 1, the 10th episode that shows on HBO is either one of those look aheads, previews, or making-of type deals.

Actually, tonight looks like the shortest of all the episodes. HBO says only 46 minutes and that usually includes stuff like ads from other shows and the credits.
Short one

I really don’t see how.

From where they are now to the end of the first game’s story line is 2 hours minimum unless they cut out a white bunch of stuff.

Im just going on what the channel guide says on DirecTV
9-9:46. I was hoping, at first, I was misreading... and maybe I did. But I think it's short. Sucks.

Yep, shortest of this first season.
I did not read anything on there other than runtime, I dont want any spoilers ha

Well, the definitely kept things pretty lean. I am glad they kept the giraffe scene in there, and it was almost a 1:1 of the game. It's one of the game's more iconic moments, and my daughter and I were taking bets whether it would actually make it into Season 1 on account of how fast they were moving through everything.

Interesting scene with Ellie's mother - that backstory was not portrayed in the game. The woman playing the role of Ellie's mother was Ashley Johnson, who did the voice acting for Ellie. She doesn't change her voice much for the role, so it was a bit weird to hear her speaking/struggling during the fight when your mind associated that sound with a small 14 year old brunette child.

Without leaving too much in the way of spoilers, Joel's decision to take the life of the surgeon, and spare those of the nurses, will play a pivotal role regarding how events play out in the second season.

So, summary of feelings on Season 1 of TLoU - Not a bad show, probably one of the better, if not best, adaptations of game to TV from a "please don't let them ruin this completely" perspective like they've done to so many others. The show does pale in comparison to the game though, mostly because of the pacing. There is just so much detail and nuance that gets lost, especially when it comes to character relationships, when you go from roughly 15 hours of gameplay to only 8 1/2 or so hours of airtime. Even more so when the game has so many more actual zombies and tense, quiet moments that really emphasize how codependent Ellie and Joel become to one another for survival.

Not a gamer but I was disappointed in the whole thing. Too much facial closeups and not enough zombies and zombie killin'. Just sayin'.

Part of me wonders how much of that was the director's decision, and part of me wonders how much money HBO actually gave them for the budget. I suspect some of the locations in the game for season 2 will require more money for both set design and CGI work. On the plus side for them, a lot of the early gameplay is set in Seattle which has turned into such a dump that they'd barely have to touch it!

I watched and kept telling myself after each episode I was done. I watched this season, but I have already deleted it from my DVR for next season, just didn't do it for me.
