Hey all, I've been thinking about a "perfect" HD gun since I'm renovating my house & my gf will be moving in soon (yes I know there's no such thing as a "perfect" HD gun).

I'm sort of settling on a suppressed 300blk SBR (yes 2 stamps I know...hence the head first). I'd go for a brace and make it a pistol except that I've never shot a brace & don't know how I'd feel with it pressed against my shoulder vs a stock which I know what I like & how comfy it is.

So what kind of mud pit am I stepping in? Do I go for a build or go the easy rout with a Sig MPX or something similar? If I build do I just go pistol first then SBR it? I just don't know exactly where to start.

Also for the NFA stuff, whats the best way to go about it (I'm in Raleigh FYI) ?

Face 300blk suppressors (emphasis on sound since the idea is shooting indoors without ear pro).

Tell me what I'm getting into & why I should or shouldn't.

Since you seem obviously well versed.....think a 300blk suppressed sbr (or pistol) is a better HD option as far as ease of use and suppressability vs a 9mm suppressed sbr (or pistol)? Mainly looking for something for me & my fiance that if shit hits the fan, we have a quiet and maneuverable firearm for home defense.

Also as far as suppressors, do you have a fave for 300blk (or 9mm)

Before I answer those questions, I’ll add two more positives for the brace (in addition to the cost).
• braced pistol would be covered by your CHP (assuming you have one), meaning legally concealed in a vehicle as well...at least until any new law changes that
• no permission required if you want to cross state lines, since SBRs require it but pistols and silencers don’t

My primary HD firearm is a suppressed 9mm SBR. My two 300BLK firearms (10” SBR and 7.5” pistol) are the least reliable firearms I own. I do have other firearms handy (handguns and SBSs) depending on the room I’m in. I’ve even considered one of my suppressed 5.56 SBRs. But for now, it’s the 9mm with 32+1 rounds of HST loaded plus a second mag ready to go.

Multiple people here will recommend a rifle round over a pistol round. I get it. They’ll also say if you go 300BLK, load it with supers due to the shock transferred over 2000fps (or 2100/2200, can’t remember the number from the study).

Longest shot in my house is maybe 30’, and my 9mm SBR runs like a sewing machine. :D

As far as silencers go, lots of options. I personally don’t like pistol cans for subsonic 300BLK. And I would want to be limited to subsonic, although there are a couple pistol cans rated for supers.

Once you decide on 300BLK vs 9mm, then we could start to narrow down which one.

Tell me about this unreliability. Is that common in 300blk SBRs? I'd want to run subsonics for the quietness suppressed. If its a generally unreliable round I'm down for a 9mm SBR suppressed as I know we can handle that round well & accurately.

No, I think they’re just mine. The 10” was a used upper with a barrel swap (before I bought it). The 7.5” was also used and had some issues on my end. I’m not saying they won’t run a full mag or two without an issue, just that compared to everything else I have to choose from they’d be near the bottom.

I also have a 16” that I rarely shoot, but it’s never had any issues.

Im just here to say Im stoked to see MHUX posting.

Heres a cmmg 45acp I just picked up and added the sba4 brace. Very comfy for what it is, cheaper than SBR and the option of carrying loaded in vehicle.

The 3 is smaller overall, probably better suited for a subgun/home defense type build. The 4 is wider, alot stronger looking and very solid. IF and IF a guy was to shoulder one in the heat of the moment and you were a little high on the shoulder I think I'd prefer the bracing at the bottom of the 4. Id also feel alot better with a 4 on anything bigger than 223/pistol cal. Im not sure if theres a LOP difference but the 4 is very comfortable and has a little better cheek weld imo.

I built a 10” 300BLK SBR 10+ years ago, once it was set up, subs or supers there’s been only one FTF due to a bad primer.
I’ve also an 8.5” pistol Black Friday PSA build for a year, it hasn’t been shot much, but has run without a glitch on supers.
As @BigWaylon stated previously, I’d go the pistol route with the SBA3/4 for carry, transportation and cost.
The SBR sports a TBAC Ultra.
