Weighing my options for a HD gun in the near future. I’ve focused on reasonably priced PCCs as 9mm is easily the cheapest option, and will allow me to train relatively consistently.

My thoughts are this ..the high point carbines seem to work fine , but I would fully explore all options
I would explore other lower cost PCCs such as the Kel Tec Sub2K. Kel Tec is introducing a new model so any of the current (older) models will be lower cost. I like the Sub 2k because you can pick a common mag pattern (Glock or other ) that could could match up with a pistol down the road that could share same mags and ammo.

I just went through this exercise and I bought a Gen2 Sub2K; happy with it.

why not save your pennies and get a low end AR15? a high point is probably gonna run you $300+ these days, or considerably more if you want colors and what not... for an 8rd 9mm...
This is the age of cheap ARs, and you're silly not to indulge. There are regularly kits you can get for around $400, 30rd mags of 5.56, which have 3x the energy of a 9mm. yet the rotating bolt of an AR a makes for a softer shooting gun than a blowback 9mm gun like the hipoint
Also, 5.56 goes through less drywall than 9mm.

consider all your options. the only thing 9mm has over an AR is the ammo is about half the price. that will come in handy, because whatever you get, you need to run the crap out of it for a while to make sure it's not a lemon.

One of the best guns on the market for the money. They run without jamming. I’ve got one of the original versions (monkey gun) and have a 9mm and a 45acp in the newer versions. I actually prefer the 45. With a 20 round (actually 16-17) mag, it’s a pretty potent weapon. With a red dot sight they have proven to be pretty darn accurate. That’s also double the amount of lead down range than an AR with a 30 round mag

As a former owner of carbines in 9 and 40 I would say that mine never were 100% reliable for some reason. This may be an outlier but that was my experience. I will say that taking them apart is a bit more evolved than on most modern guns, you actually need wrenches and stuff.

The 9 mm uses 10 round mags, so does the 40, the 45 ACP is 9 rounds.

No argument with that but I think there are also 15 rounders for the 9 at least.

Has anyone tried the Promag drum? I just ordered one, eta is Wednesday. Will have range report shortly.

I went through this a year or so ago. I ended up with a MP5 clone because I kept seeing "for a little more you can get an upgraded platfor" like below:
HP->a few hundy for you can get a AR9->a few hundy more a scorpian->a fee hundy more a MP5 clone.

Base HP $250
HIGH tower Stock Upgrade: $200
Iron Sights : $50
More mags: $50

I'd just look at the keltec aub2k since they are $250 after rebate.

I would not. The Hi Point 995 does not have an especially great track record for long-term reliability or durability. I know it has its fans, but it has its detractors too, and I just would not want to defend my home with something I didn't fully trust. Maybe if you want a cheaply-made plinker... Maybe? Still probably not. I would not trust a HP 995 for home defense. I wouldn't trust a gun that changes POI if you pull on the handguard too hard, or whose front sight randomly breaks off just pushing on it.

If you really need an inexpensive 9mm PCC for home defense, I would suggest an Extar EP9 or Ruger PC Carbine. Both are in that budget-friendly price range and take much better magazines, while having great reputations for reliability.

This is a lot of value for the money - the Magpul stocks are nice. This with some Magpul 27rd 9mm Glock Pmags, with a Sig Romeo 5 red dot, and you're in business for not too much cost. Get a couple boxes of Speer Gold Dots and you've got a great setup for around $700 total investment with ammo and mags.

I have to say ... it will get the job done but it's quite ugly ...

My two cents, and what I use for a home defense gun. Glock 20. Buy a few extra mags. Keep one loaded with quality, full power, bonded hollow points for home defense. Something like Underwood or Double Tap. And keep another loaded with quality, full power, hard cast, extreme hunter or something similar for camping and hiking in bear country. Most 10mm handguns will cycle 40S&W range ammo just fine. Since 40 is falling out of favor I can usually pick it up from private sellers cheaper than even 9mm bulk. I've accumulated a couple thousand rounds of it over the years for cheap. Plenty for range days for the foreseeable future. Shooting 40 out of a large frame 10mm feels about like shooting a hot 9mm, not bad at all. Only real downside is eventually the cheap 40 ammo will dry up, but hey, I'll still be left with a few cool 10mm guns. If you are going this route just be sure to give the barrel a good cleaning after some 40S&W range time. It can foul up the end of the chamber enough to keep a full length 10mm case from seating properly, possibly leading to an out-of-battery situation. Which on a defensive gun is not good.

Word has it they are bringing the original style back!
And why they didn't take that opportunity to make them Glock mag compatible is beyond me.
I've been sorely tempted by one of these for a long time just for the Planet of the Apes vibe.
But the magazine limitations always zapped that thought. Mebbe they're doin me a favor.. 😂

So have you bought one yet?

HiPoint for a home defense gun? A HiPoint? You said HiPoint? Your primary defensive means? The gun you’re going gamble your life on? I say get you a hammer or a slingshot.

My friend had one. He is a member who doesn’t post anymore. I think it was a HiPoint trainer model because it would consistently jam and he got reallllll good at clearing it.

Yeah but imagine getting hit in the head with one that was swung in anger....

I had one years back and wish I hadn't sold it. Mine was reliable.

As far as the whole "is ten rounds enough" thing that's up to you. I don't think mag capacity is likely to be a game changer in a home defense shooting but you never know. Lots of experts who know more than I do and they don't agree with each other. Some say nothing less than fifty rounds in your body or you're toast, others swear by the j frame. Point is, if guys who know better tell you completely different things, you're on your own. We all just have to look, listen and make up our own minds.

All that said, I'll echo what another poster said, the price of AR type rifles today is really attractive. Also, used police trade in Glocks are an incredible bargain. The "good old days" are right now. Buy a hi point, but an AR or buy whatever but just buy a gun.

Right now you can build an Endomag (pricey but uses regular AR lowers) 9mm AR for between $300 and $400 bucks.

Endomags need a Pmag and their guts package and aren't cheap, but the ejector is built into the mag and they work great if you want to just slap a 9mm upper on a lower you already have. If you shop around you can get a complete 9mm pistol upper for as little as $250 on sale.

To me the primary weakness is the magazine. Has anyone successfully converted the hi-point to function well with any other mag style ?

I just picked up a used HiPoint 45 carbine with 3- 20 round mags. I have a 40 carbine and I enjoy shooting them. HiPoint 45 was my first pistol.
Haters gonna hate but I liked it and subsequent purchases. Heavy & bulky so it would not work for daily CCW for ME. The carbines are a blast

I did not know they made 20 rounders for the 45 ACP?
