Are the iPads worth it? My Asus Nexus tablet has crapped out. 1st Gen, so its like 6+ years old. Target has the 32GB iPad with the A9 processor (2017 model) for $249.
I've only had Android tablets. I'm just tired of being on my phone all the time at home surfing the net. 5.5" screen is big for a phone...but tiny for being on it for an extended period of time.

Or I could get an Amazon Fire tablet and hack it so it has Google play.
....... decisions decisions

I'd like to hear from droid users that might have an iPad or droid users that have switched to iPad. I know all the Apple fanbots are gonna rave about their products. I'd like real world senarios.

Im nobody's fanboy. Don't even own a CZ or Glock. ;)

I own a smaller Samsung Android and an iPad. I almost never use the Samsung but I'm on the iPad a bunch. Not sure whether it is the screen size or simplicity of iOS.

Yep for me it is all about how easy it is to use and apple is super easy.

Android phone user. I switched from Android tablets to an iPad ONLY because the rest of my family uses iPads and Apple has their Messenger app totally locked down, so the only way to send/receive iMessages is to use an Apple device.

I prefer Android tablets because they are much more open in terms of apps and settings, and that's even before you root it. With iOS, you need to jailbreak to get out of Apple's locked garden, and jailbreaks are not readily available for newer iOS versions, and many of the newer jailbreaks are not permanent and have to be repeated weekly. I've been waiting for a jailbreak for the iOS version I'm on for over a year. This is unheard of in the Android root community where root exploits are much more readily available.

No way in hell I'd switch to an iPhone. I'll stick with iPad b/c of iMessage, but as soon as someone figures out a way to access iMessage w/o an Apple device, I'm out!

I use a mac and an iphone, but have a 7" samsung Tab A to read books/twitter on.

I had a 2012 Nexus 7 which died, replaced it with the tab A, and it's fine for what I use it for. If you're going to do any real web surfing though I would NOT recommend it. Modern web pages are just so jammed with crap that it can't render fast enough with either the adblock browser or Chrome. I imagine the cheapy ipad does not have that problem with the A9 chip.

Yea, that's all that holds me back. People at work who've switched away from macs and lost imessage hate that I can still carry on a SMS or imessage based conversation with a full keyboard on my mac. Even @Sneakymedic isn't a fan because I 'text bomb' him with way too long of text messages from imessage.

I was android only for years. Gradually have transitioned to iEverything because they work together seamlessly. I bought the 2017 iPads for me and my 12 year old son to use at school. I have no regrets.

One example of what I'm talking about: If you want to install an app that isn't in Apple's App store and you are not an Apple developer, you have to reinstall it every week.

As someone who has been on Android for a decade, this blew my mind. iOS users live on their knees . . . and they seem to love it!

I must acknowledge that iMessage rocks; it's a killer app. Android needs the equivalent.

That's such a good price, I just bought one. Thanks for solving my "What to get my wife for her birthday" problem. :)

Ermuhgerd... I get 10 messages at a time and they are all jumbled up. I have to pick what text goes with which.

I use iPhone, Mac and two iPads. Two because I am on the iPad all the time and I rotate them. It's not perfect but I love it. I can sit on the couch with family instead of down at the "office", and it's WAY better than trying to use the phone for Internet stuff. You sort of have to adopt the Apple way of doing things, but I've been an Apple user since Day One and its natural for me. Never been more satisfied with a piece of electronic gear.

I just got one for work, it's an ipad pro and in my opinion it sucks ass. I can't figure out how to work the damn thing. I've been trying to sync my laser measuring device to it and can't get it to work. I downloaded the app but can't figure out where it went.

NO matter what she said.....it's NOT that big....LOL

sorry....had to....it was a soft pitch over the plate and I had to hit a homer with it! LOL

I'm still torn. I couldn't figure out how to close an app and I was at Best buy playing with the iPad. I had to ask an associate; kinda stupid the way it does it if you ask me. Android makes soooo much MORE sense to me...and THAT'S what I'm afraid of...spending $250 on an iPad and being totally frustrated with it. Still trying to decide.

Keep the advice coming.

I'm an I-Pad guy, mainly because I use iPhone and the sync is cool. If you are on the iPad and the phone rings you can answer or text from the iPad. If you use a Mac you can text right across the computer screen.

I have an ipad. I inherited on old gen 1 model that I still use some, but my primary one is a newer model. I am not a fan of Fruit as I've taken to calling them for a lot of the reasons that @drypowder mentions, but then I am also a die hard Linux user and have been for the better part of last two decades. Fruit does some strange things that haven't been mentioned too, such as insisting on non standard port and protocol combinations for email, not supporting multiple VPN configurations, and a few others. My absolute biggest complaint is that they seem to be pro-corporate and anti-user in that they actively deny having ad block on the browser. These days ad blocking is all but necessary as it 1) consumes a lot of resources that you're paying for, 2) slows page loads down tremendously to where they can be unusable, 3) often times contains malware, 4) is over the top to the point that it often times breaks pages (they don't care if you get the content, just that you see their stupid advertisement).

The only reason I got an ipad over an android device (and I am not particularly a fan of Google which is just as bad as Apple and in many ways worse, but you have more options to take control of the device including using a non Google OS) is because my wife was used to the ipad already.

If you're trying to replace a PC device, you will find that by default, meaning unless you pay $$ for applications, it lacks many features including basic things like file storage and browsing.

I started with an android smart phone years ago, hating apple and their products. Bought a truck that recognizes iTunes and switched to an iPhone for that reason. Now I have an iPhone for personal use and a droid for work and I greatly dislike the droid. Everything is easier to access on the iPhone, and to me it is a simpler system to use.

Well, I decided to try the iPad. I know the learning curve will be steep for me as I’ve been a droid fanboy from the beginning. But I don’t like Samsung and everybody raves about apple products. Figured I’d at least taste the kool-aid.....lol

Just place your finger in the center of the word and hold it on the screen. You are right though, there is a learning curve. I lost mine, but those little rubber tipped pointers do help. Don't worry, it is new. You'll get it quicker than you think. And if you hate it, I'll buy your iPad for half price. :D

Yeah I hear ya.. might just have to sell it to you for $500.... cause they cost $1000... right [emoji6]
Tapatalk is retarded on iPad. That's not iPads fault..but dang.
I miss the back button the most that I have on my Droid. I'll keep playing with it and learn some more tomorrow. I've only played with it a few hours and have learned some stuff. I had to do an iOS update and download some apps.

You don't HAVE to do iOS updates, but Apple loves to shove them down your throat.
Well for some Reason it wasn't finding my time zone...updated and all is good.

I have a Google phone that I really like. At work I have an iPhone and an iPad, I really don't care for Apple, I'm always having problems with my work stuff but that could be because of the programs/software we use. I really miss my technet.

What are you using where you don't have a back button?

Well, I should better explain. Yes, chrome has the back button in the top left. I'm use to the bottom left to go back as well as the square button on bottom right on droids that show your open apps.
I know about the round home button in the middle and double pressing it shows your open apps. It's just different ( and retarded in my opinion).
Still learning "Apple's way".....

Even better, the back button is at the top left on an iPad, but bottom left on an iPhone.

I normally just use Safari, but Chrome may work the same way...a one-finger swipe across the screen from left to right (like flipping back one page in a book) also is "back".

ETA: and a right to left swipe takes you forward to where you were...

Do tell about the swipe feature that takes you back a page or forward a page! My iPad does not do that. I’ve tried every browser. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

Help.

I’ve even looked at settings but am not seeing anything that enables it.
It’s a new iPad...current version. What gives?

DS

Where is that setting? I’m not seeing it in settings....

DS

Ok...found it under General—-multitasking and dock.....

Gestures was on already.

Still can’t swipe between pages :(

DS

Make sure you are beginning your swipe on the black border of the iPad.

I have an iPhone now too. I guess somebody at my company loves apple. I’m learning and it doesn’t suck as bad as I thought.

IPad. Have it, Like it. Also have Samsung Tablet..... no like it. All other phones in the house are IPhones 6>. I like the Apple Products. They work well.

based upon my friends/relatives iPad experiences:
once you are in, you are IN. nothing else matters.
