Trophy or Spirit Animal…. What say you??

White / Albino Deer…. Is it a wall trophy or a spirit animal that should be left alone?

Oddly enough, this topic has come up randomly over the past couple of weeks, by different customers at different times…. With a number of thoughts. I think it is driven recently by more folks seeing the white deer in town. With that said, I was curious to know what the thoughts were across the CFF family. There is no right or wrong answer, just trying to get a wider view and understanding of how people view albino deer: trophy or spirit animal???

I saw a albino doe forty years ago while hunting in Connecticut.

Was sitting about ten foot of a trail and she came by. She stop and look at me. The hair on the back of my nick went straight.

She just pause and then went down the trail.

I stop hunting for the rest of the day. I was spooked.

old saying: bad luck to shoot a white deer.....but.....
quote:
Scientifically speaking, it seems to make sense to shoot white deer at every opportunity.
They are white because they have genetic deficiencies that prevent them from having normal colorations.
Presumably, these deficiencies make white deer more susceptible to any number of diseases that normal deer have the ability to fight off, thanks to their genetic makeup.

If I’m hungry enough, it will go to the freezer, whether fawn, doe, coloration, etc. If sport hunting, I might be more choosy.

Same….

Comes to family eating or not, all that other stuff goes out the window.

After all, an albino deer will probably taste better than the neighbors anyway.

And you know my feelings on that matter.

Meh.

It's not as if they're a separate breed/species. If that were the case, then I'd be against it. Since they're not, I say it's up to the hunter.

I will say that people as a group are insanely unpredictable about such matters, so I wouldn't intentionally advertise it on the various media platforms.

I remember reading a story several years ago about a man who caught a rare lobster and cooked/ate it. People flipped the f%$# out about it. I can't find the story, but I think it was in the UK (don't quote me). Of course, people in the UK will flip out over finding a single .22 cartridge, call their bomb squad into action, and make headlines over it, too, so what do you expect?

Just like the White Buffalo is considered sacred, it is considered very bad luck to kill a piebald...that just to see one is a spiritual occurrence and you should let it pass in peace.

On the other hand, I once told a young man that yes, he should pop a piebald as it was the only all white meat deer and the very best eating...
