Trout fishing farm

Lots of folks will go to the Cherokee reservation around Gatlinburg for the same type of fishing. They stock the rivers just about every week.

Looked at some of their pics. The tails on a majority of the fish are worn indicating they're retired breeding stock; the tails get worn down on the cement in the fish runs. Not that there's anything wrong with that, they're generally larger fish than what's normally stocked in a stream.

Lots of trout fishing in WNC. And it will not cost 5 bucks a pound.
Absolutely. My happy place is a back country small stream with nobody else around. I like the company.

BUT....if you want to "catch" instead of "fish", farms and stocked waters have their place.

I don't know about that. Drive to Western North Carolina, get a hotel room, meals on the road, catch one 6-in trout and throw it back. Five bucks a pound sounds a lot better to me.

Yup

Apparently, the rivers in the Ozarks here are quite amenable to rainbow & brown trout & the state's been stocking them for decades.

Neighbor's got a place at Bennet Springs, near a hatchery & supposed to be killer fishing. Most of the best spots are zoned for flies or artificial baits only, so reckon I'ma hafta get a fly rod & figure it out.

Trout ain't my absolute favorite to eat, but it's damn close to it & the missus & girl child love it. With only a 1 1/2 hour drive down, I can think of worse ways to spend a weekend.

Watch a few videos and practice on dry land. Above all, cut the hook off your practice fly - midway thru the bend so you don't snag things...like your head.

If you want to fish, go for it. Don’t need to buy a license or gear. And it’s a slam dunk. They will hit a bare hook. You stop when you’re broke. Lol

If you want good trout I’d just look for trout raised by Sunburst Farms.

I’m not a fan of farm raised trout unless it’s done right. Sunburst does it right.

Better take your own rock as that place is usually crowed, and I mean standing beside you crowed. I used to fish there in the early 2ks when I was stationed at Ft Leonard Wood. Nothing else to do. Fishing was good but the stock it almost everyday.

I’d try here, I here it’s pretty good. 🤣

Farms are great for young kids with short attention spans. I used to take my cub scouts and their parents to a trout farm near Sparta NC and it was always a great time. The owner told me that on weekends, half his business was divorced and separated dads that had their kids for the weekend.

Fishing gets you free meat the same way that hunting does.
The fish and game are free because you would pay the same amount for a fishing or hunting trip whether you caught or killed anything or not.

That obviously does not apply to no-kill-no-pay commercial hunts or to fish farms where you pay by the pound.

Don't get all kitted out with Orvis Waders and LL Bean Vest and net...

It's a stick and a string. A little practice to get the fly where you want is all you need.

After fishing the Ozarks of Arkansas it’s never been the same in NC. Three days with a guide paid by a supplier. Everything I caught in Rainbows and Browns would be a trophy here but we released all of them. Ponds are great excellent places to introduce kids to fishing without the boredom.

Free? How about all the costs it takes to get that free fish or meat ? I know I spent a LOT of money for a boat, gear and license fees plus maint on said boat and gas to go get me some free fish. I don't think we fish or hunt for protein because its cheap. We do it to get out of the house, get away from the Wife, do Manly things then beat our chests and make grunting noises LOL

Bunch of great Trout Farms in Virginia. They are fun for sure... kids love them. Hell, I like them.

Some of our hunting group skipped the morning hunt and his the river to catch 12 Rainbows (Just stocked)... didn't cost them a thing.

We would hit the Trout Farms when our stock ran lower than a winter's worth.

But I like a stream with catch and release...... cause I hate the taste of trout! I had it every Friday growing up because Mom was Italian...... Gezzus, Joooeph *Mary .....

Bet you don’t hunt. Am I right?

It does get crowded, but not standing room only. Neighbor knows some spots that produce & don't get too crowded.

I'ma be honest, I enjoy the catchin' & eatin' more than the fishin'. Trout are near the top of the list of my favorite eatin' fish & if I can get 'em easy, I'm on it.

Lol! Yeah, I'm a red worm or chicken liver on a hook with a bobber kinda , so not trying to go crazy. Also be good practice for when I go visit my uncle in Coeur d'Alene, ID in the next year or 2. He's relishing his role as the family fishing guide since he retired & I'm overdue to experience that part of the country.

Never fished NC, but will never forget the time my 2 eldest uncles (which includes the aforementioned) took me trout fishing on the White River near Branson when I was 14 or so. Canoed & fished all day Fri, Sat & Sun, camping on sand bars & eating fresh trout 3 meals/day. 42 keepers between the 3 of us, all Rainbows, with the exception of a nice Brown an uncle caught & a nice 2lb Smallie I got. We ate all but 5 over the weekend. I think the couple cans of green beans & corn was to appease my grandmother, 'cos the only thing we consumed over the course of the long weekend was bacon, eggs, damn near every fish we could get in the canoes & a couple cases of Schlitz. Good times.

You are correct Sir , well not since I moved to NC back in 1998 from Florida. Used to hunt Pigs down there because I found that wild pig actually tasted better then store bought. Don't like the taste of venison, squirrel, possum or wild birds and as long as beef and chicken is available at the local beer store , no sense in me killing something. Now, I have a Cousin that eats road kill, honest to God. He hasn't bought store meat in 55 years that he admits to or I know of.

Well roadkill would be pretty much free, but hunting is an expensive way to source protein, as is fishing. Hence my comment that one is as “free” as the other.

I've fished here for my whole life. The last decade or so the "tuck" as been advertised as "the" place to fly fish for tourists.

It's hilarious to watch the kitted up dudes go through the stages from annoyed to wanting to fight as i fish behind them (poor manners to get in ahead of someone, plus no need😂).

A short, fat redneck in wading shoes, swim trunks and a 25 year old south bend walmart special flyrod with a Altoids size box of flies. Catches fish every hole the kitted up dudes just left. Eventually at least a third get mad and claim I'm fishing "their" water🙄

For the OP. Farms are great for getting kids into fishing. Do it!
