Unable to Text Menu from Phone

In the last few weeks, I've noticed I'm not able to use any menu features from my phone. I can enter and delete text, but all the menu items are grayed out. Can't bold or italicize or inset pics. Also noticed extra text showing up during typing. Using Android. Fine on the laptop.

Any ideas?

Try this.

Click the three dots.
Click the brackets.

See if everything works again.
