Unemployment gives me time to handle snakes.

I've been living in this neighborhood for 21 years and have never seen a snake. I've seen a ring-necked pheasant in my backyard, but not a snake. My wife claimed she saw one in the wood pile a few months back, but I never saw it.

Fast forward to yesterday, and she is removing the cinder blocks that we had set up as a temporary dog house, turned wood shed, and in one of the last three blocks left, there it was, all coiled up in one of the blocks.

I moved it from the block to a plastic container with lid and relocated it to the swamp just down the road.

I was out of town when my wife found this one. She text back to say that my daughter's boyfriend was coming over to take care of it. I told her to ask him not to kill it. He was already attempting to, but the hoe blade wouldn't fit in the block. When she stopped him, he just placed a brick paver on the block and left.

I was glad he didn't kill him, but it still had to go. I've never seen my wife so jittery over any animal before.

Found the first snake on my property the other day (been here 6 years). My three year old daughter wanted to touch it. It made my day! She was so excited. Now she walks around with a stick “I’m looking for snakes like daddy”.
