I picked up a buddy's brass at the range the other day. He doesn't reload, so freebies for me.

I sorted it this evening and found some really bulged cases. (see Fig. 1) Did a little homework and it seems it's from an unsupported chamber, often attributed to Glock (and some other designs), mostly found in .40 & .45 acp. These, though, are in 9mm.

My question is: how dangerous is this/might this be? In my limited reading, some said no problem, others posted a pick of a blowout or told a horror story they heard from a guy whose cousin's wife worked with a lady whose BiL ...

Should I caution my buddy to use lower-pressure factory loads (i.e. no +P ammo)?

That looks like more than unsupported. More like unchambered. The firing pin indent "looks" rounded not retanglular shape. I would segregate and not reload any like this. I used to cut these in half to educate myself about brass an its weaknesses.

9 fired in a 40?
better pic of the primer?

When I've seen that it's been in front of the web.

That looks unsupported as in not in battery or still under pressure when the action had unlocked, a PCC with the wrong reciprocating assembly might have the dwell time required.

Would not reload.

Yeah. I just looked at some brass that was in wrong chamber. The bullet side is swollen to match chamber.

I have picked up some 9mm and 30 carbine that has this bulge in it before and threw them in the sell for scraps pile. It isn't worth it to me to use them.

This was my gut reaction, but I know I'm ignorant, so I went to The Oracle.

(Google search)

Thanks for all the input! I have no intention of loading any of the 9mm. Better safe than lefty, I always say! (You Southpaws may edit as needed)

Most of the "normal" bulges I read up on only bulged in part of the case--the part facing the mag well, which was the unsupported part. The 360-degree bulge, together with the magnitude of it, was what prompted me to ask.

Much grass, seniors.

Follow up:

Just talked to him, he said he realized he had a problem and was on it.

Thanks again for the replies & info!

What the heck problem did he realize he had?
One that stopped him from shooting!
He hasn't figured it out yet, just knows not to shoot it again till he figures it out. We're talking; when I know, I'll post it.

Posted this earlier, but looks like it went to Valhalla when the upgrade was goin' on.

Turned out to be a head spacing issue on his new upper. Liberated the upper, dropped an unfired round into the chamber, and it protruded just exactly the amount of the case bulge in the spent cases.

He's sending/taking it back to the mfg. for fixin'.

Thanks for all the comments and insights!

I've done some research and taken a few pictures of how the Glock OEM barrels match up with cartridges in the Glock 21 in .45 ACP. It's not unsupported all around like that, but rather at the base of the ramp. I've not seen a Glock do that to a round before, with that type of pattern.

Yeah, I looked at several pics of just that, and that helped narrow down the choice from weird but ok to Bad! Investigate further!

That led to the comparison of the head spacing btw 2 diff barrels (chambers) for same gun. It was then obvious the 9mm wasn't seating all the way.
