Jerek had his 3rd lumbar puncture on Tuesday. Once again, everything went well. His blood counts dropped pretty significantly over the weekend so he had to get platelets on Tuesday before the lumbar puncture and during it. His hemoglobin was also pretty low and they told him he needed blood. They gave him the option to get it Tuesday or wait until today. He told them he would wait until today. He was also neutropenic again on Tuesday so they started him back on the preventative antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral medications.
This morning when he got up, he had spiked a fever. He was already scheduled to come in for a blood transfusion and labs so we just told the nurses when we got here. When they got his labs back this morning, his numbers had tanked. Typically they will not give a patient blood if they have a fever, but his hemoglobin had dropped so low they didn’t have a choice. They gave him Tylenol to help control the fever while they transfused 2 units of blood. He was admitted and they began IV antibiotics. They did blood cultures as well as a chest x-ray to try to pinpoint exactly what type of infection he may have.
They are closely monitoring his fever by checking his temp every hour. It does fluctuate but has not gotten below 99.5 since we have been here. The most recent temp taken was 101.2. Aside from having a mild headache and being tired, he says he feels fine. Please pray the fever breaks and they are able to knock out whatever infection he may have so we can get back home.
