Sadly, things seem to be getting worse instead of better. Yesterday the fever hit another new high – 103.4. Since his platelets are high right now (in the normal range), the doctors felt comfortable giving him ibuprofen. Since Tylenol alone was no longer getting the fevers down, they started doing Tylenol and ibuprofen together. This is working well. He needed a blood transfusion yesterday so the ibuprofen helped get the fever down enough for them to run his transfusion.
Unfortunately they still haven’t figured out where the infection is. He is still having fevers. The headaches seem to be fever related. The higher the fever goes, the worse his head hurts. They did start him on a new medicine yesterday that is supposed to help with the headaches. We don’t know for sure, but he seemed to have serious side effects to this medication. He was very confused today and stayed sick/nauseous. He refused the medicine tonight so we will see if he seems better tomorrow.
On a positive note, his counts came up beautifully today. His neutrophils (infection fighting cells) more than doubled today. Hopefully the combination of his counts coming up and the new antibiotic will finally get rid of the infection and break the fevers for good. Time will tell and at this point, it is just a waiting game.
