Republican AGs press UPS, FedEx on gun tracking

Montana Attorney General Austin Knudson and a coalition of 16 other Republican AGs have sent letters to the CEOs of FedEx and UPS demanding answers about new policies that they allege could help the Biden administration establish a backdoor gun registry.

In the letters, Knudson and other AGs say they’ve heard from a number of federally licensed firearms dealers over the past few weeks about the new policies, which require all FFLs to “create three separate shipping accounts: one for firearms, one for firearm parts, and one for all other firearm-related products.” Knudson says that because FFLs can no longer mix-and-match shipments, the companies are now able to determine whether a particular shipment includes a gun part, accessories, or an actual firearm.

According to the AGs, that new policy, combined with other new restrictions, has left them wondering if UPS and FedEx are now enabling the government to establish at least a partial database of gun owners in violation of federal law.

Don't ask, don't tell.

FWIW, none of those companies have the staff to do their most basic task - get a package from A to B in a timely manner - so they sure as hell don't have the time to x-ray every single package.

As much as I want to be outraged, not quite sure this is outrageous.

The Government has my fingerprints for gun licenses. I'm probably a gun owner.
I've filled out countless 4473. I'm probably a gun owner.
I buy stuff from places like SGAmmo and Powder Valley that really only sell ammunition or reloading supplies. I'm probably a gun owner.

The thing that becomes outrageous is a detailed model/serial registry. I think ATF has been doing their level best to build that prior to this new shipping thing, but the free states still have legal transfers between free men so there's no real knowing who has what or how much.

I wish businesses would stay out of politics.

While I agree with @Timfoilhat that the gov has my info and records of plenty of my guns, including NFA, there is no reason for the shippers to be doing this. It would be a little different if there were more than 2 common carriers, but these 2 are like 97% of the market.

Hmm, there's already problems with employees stealing guns, so what if we make the packages even easier to identify?
If they end up doing this, they need to be held accountable for any missing weapons, and should those weapons be used in a crime they should be held accountable for that too.
