A proposed bill in Vermont will ban the open or concealed carrying of semiautomatic handguns in parks, stores, restaurants, airports, places of worship, auditoriums, theaters, childcare facilities, and in public during political demonstrations.

Gun owners will still be allowed to carry semiautomatics handguns in downtown areas and on public streets.

And they would also be permitted to carry single-shot and single-action firearms in those locations where semiautomatic handguns are prohibited.

The scariest thing in that article is the expansion of the term "assault weapon" to include pistols.

Verbiage does not happen in a vacuum...I wold expect that change in language was work shopped and is being floated here in advance of changing the dialog nationwide.

Well here's a democrat that "gets it", anyways. From the article:

Sen. John Rodgers (D-Essex-Orleans) called it a “non-starter.”

“They want to stop people from being able to carry guns for self protection and I can’t vote for that,” Rodgers explained.

“Taking rights away from law abiding citizens is not going to help,” he continued. “Criminals are going to carry them because they don’t care about the law.”

If the bill is passed I think it will be challenged in court based on Heller and what is considered “common use for lawful purposes like self-defense.” I hope it’s just all talk though.

Semi autos pistols have been available since the 1890s. Only 30 years after double action revolvers and 40 years after single actions. Arms designers had to wait till smokeless powder made semi's reliable. They should start with who the state can control. Start issuing revolvers to State and Local police and turn in their autos.

Just what the criminals and the terrorists want, more Gun Free Zones and unarmed citizens.

This isn't news, depending on what you mean...

Most modern sporting rifle ban states that define such as 'AWs' use language like 'a semi-automatic firearm with detachable magazine and any combination of x or more of the following features: (1) bayonet, (2) telescoping stock, (3) a shoulder thingy that goes up, (4) continued enumeration of more dumb liberal BS that is either cosmetic, economical or makes the weapon SAFER. Get a threaded barrel for your Gee 19? Tactical baby seal clubbing assault pistol. Slap that bad mamma mamma in a Roni? Sheeeeeet, they'll hang you as the culprit behind global warming. Thats a barrel shroud my friend. Instant death-dealing assault pistol of mass destruction, designed to make it more comfortable to use 33 round magazines--pumping 23 more rounds worth of carbon-based greenhouse gases into our atmosphere at a time. Those damn northeast hippies would be jamming out to Phish tunes, hugging rocks on the surface of a meteor the size of Texas bound straight for planet earth before they would classify even a pistol any other way.
