So who does it? I believe it was @Zbizzle911 who posted it a few days ago and I asked about it. Made sense for protecting your scope. Some googling shows it is a popular way to camo your rifle or a removable base for spraying a different color...

I have some red vet tape and was playing around with it. Not sure... I imagine it would keep the gun cooler in the sun compared to black...

How many folks do it at competitions and such?

We have a supply from our vet. I literally had no idea people were using this stuff for firearms.
I didn't either until I was shooting my first PRS match. I saw several people with it on their scopes and thought it was to look tactical. On stage 4 my rifle fell off my cart and dinged the scope. Two guys I was shooting with said thats why they use it. Its especially helpful if shooting around concrete and other rough barricades. It just adds a level of protection for the finish on these expensive scopes.

I use it on AR mags during matches to quickly identify my 55gr from the 77gr stuff.

I also used it at times to create an index point for cheek weld on shotgun - cause i sucks the shotgun.

There’s similar wraps available at most sporting stores that only stick to themself and not the firearm. Mostly Camo but I have seen OD as well. I wrap the barrels of my stainless hunting rifles to avoid unwanted attention.

The vet tape only sticks to itself also.
