Built with "public funds" (aka taxes) 'so that the public would always have a range', the Sheriff has closed it to the public. This would seem to be ill-advised at best and an illegal abuse of power at the worst. So, ...

Why was it closed? People trashing the place? People committing crimes there, ie car break in's and such? Could be a good reason to shut it down but one would need more info to form an opinion.

It's been covered here, but basically it appears that the sheriff used an irrelevant incident (LEO *** ND) to stick it to the taxpayers of Wake County.

*** My error. @Miss Lily has slapped me down for it.

Please stop spreading this falsehood. It was a non-LE instructor.

Closing the range to the public has been on the Sheriff's agenda since he took office. This ND incident was merely used as a catalyst to shorten his timeline.

Oh my goodness, I'm sorry. I got that from here.

Not my county, but I agree that dufus needs to be fired, removed, and run out of town.

Well, apparently, I am not alone in my ignorance. Here's an update from the 21st that says the county has already rescinded Baker's decision and (re)taken control of range administration:

So, just never mind...

Not out of the woods yet. The county has taken control of the range but, the decisions regarding management and reopening to the public remain. It is important that all interested parties continue to reach out to the commission and show up for the Board meeting on 1/6.

Here is a mail that I received from Commissioner Calabria on Tuesday:

*********************************

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this issue. I am out of town at the moment, but I wanted to send you a quick reply as I know this has been a topic of great concern.

The commissioners and county staff learned last Wednesday (at the same time as the general public) about the sheriff’s intent to close this facility to our residents. Other commissioners and I immediately asked our staff to dig into this issue, and we have been working quickly to try to come up with a solution. Two days later, our county manager formally notified the sheriff that the county commissioners would be retaking management and oversight of the facility as a result of the sheriff’s decision. Wake County to take control of shooting range from Sheriff’s Office

Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker decided to end a contract with RSM at the Wake County Firearms Training Center. Wake County will take control of the center and decide if the public should be allowed to shoot there.
www.newsobserver.com

The center is a county-owned facility. It was established to provide education and training opportunities to both law enforcement and the general public. It will take some weeks before this issue is fully resolved, largely because we will need to go through the process of regaining control, evaluating how the facility will be managed going forward, etc. Nonetheless, please know that we are working on a solution that will preserve the center’s original goals—including public access to an important facility. I’m confident that we will be able to do just that once we get everything sorted out.

I hope this additional information helps and provides some reassurance regarding what I know is a concerning issue.

Best,

Matt Calabria

Wake County Commissioner

Not my county anymore but that scumbag tarnishing the Sheriff's office needs to go. I lived in Wake for 25 years (moved into Harnett 1 year ago) I, along with every other citizen of Wake county, helped pay for that facility whether we wanted to or not with the understanding that we would have access to it. I'm gonna stop now before I get too carried away.

I left Wake County over 25 years ago. Between the time they passed the ordinance that prohibited firing a gun within 1000 feet of a residence and The time The range was constructed. The ordinance was to take effect when the county built a range.
Hope I don't have to go back to wake county.

The other day, I spoke with a long time shooter in Wake County who was active when the range was built. He recalls that the range may have been funded in part through Pittman-Robertson funds. The Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937 charges hunters an extra 11% tax on the purchase of firearms, ammunition, and archery equipment, and mandates that the proceeds be used for associated recreation, i.e., hunting and shooting. NOT LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING. If the range is closed to recreational shooting, then it would seem the county would be required to return those funds.

Wow. Interesting information there and could really become a game-changer during this process.

What's to decide, then? Do you even public servant, bro?

I have no idea what you're asking....
Sorry, I was quoting Calabria, who says that the range was built to provide services to the public and also that the commission will decide if the public is allowed to shoot there.
That's pretty sloppy thinking for a 'public servant', imo.
