We, The Marines

Meh...
I mean it was kinda cool to see Gene Hackman narrating, I didn’t know he was a marine.

HOWEVER, when I saw that they got to use ACOG’s, in basic F’ing training?!?!?
I almost had a hate seizure...
I literally started screaming at the TV....

What happened to good old fashioned iron sights?
Did the big bad corps lose their roots?!?!

Discuss...

Lose their roots? No, more like staying relevant. They transitioned to ACOGs a while ago. Personally, I wish they would have stuck with iron in boot camp, but seeing as I am not in the know of training precision shooters for over 200 years I really can't offer an educated opinion to their methodology.

The show (at least the first episode) does a good job explaining the mythos and ethos of the Corps. Now given that my dad retired from the Marines, and I have had about a dozen family members in the Marines, I was a corpsmen for about 12 years with the Marines, I do have a bias. But I am not naïve enough that I don't see the awesome PR campaign the Marines have.

An ACOG can still fail.

If you can’t do it with irons, you don’t deserve to do it with a magnified optic.

Nope!
That’s total nonsense.

Either they suffer like the rest of us did in basic, or they stop bragging

Schmidt & Bender, ACOG, or irons, they are still Marines. They will still kick the shit of just about anyone.

But I appreciate your comment....you are "old breed" to anyone who went to boot after you; everyone after your class had it easier. My mother's cousin was a China Marine, fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, was in for 30 years, retired a Master Gunnery Sgt. He was awesome. He would talk shit to my father, in from 53-74 with 3 tours in VN. I can hear him now..."you think you had it rough? Boy, let me tell you....."

We should just go back to muzzle loaders

The Army uses Aimpoints in basic training now. Iron sights are still taught and are still functional but both ACOGs and Aimpoints make for more effective killers.

I agree with both of you; I recently found out they don't use irons until SOI also and was "shocked, appalled, and saddened" to put it nicely. I had exactly the same reaction ! Of course, my next question was "what about the bayonet"? I was told they still train and use them, so I can still have hope in the new generation of amphibious monsters spreading hate and discontent to the enemies of my Nation. The bayonet is the spirit of the USMC and when we lose that, its all over but for the pretty uniforms and snazzy advertising. We'd be no better than current SEALS at that point.

What?!?!?
Seriously?!?!?
I didn’t know that...
Awww man! I was gonna keep trash talking the jarheads.
But, if the US Army, in its glorious and infinite wisdom decided to use aim points, then I’m sure they had their reasons.

I didn't get optics until right before we left for Afghan. Iron sights all the way until then, then I got a aimpoint cco reddot

Yeah.
Bayonet trading was interesting.
You had to block/parry a training dummy holding a wiffleball bat.
So I ran up, and backhanded that wiffleball bay.
I IMMEDIATELY discovered that it was not in fact a wiffleball bat, but a steel pipe filled with concrete, and painted yellow.
All I can say is, at least I had my leather gloves on so they couldn’t see me bleed

BCT uses CCO/M68/Aimpoint CompM4, but most units use irons. Obviously some are issued M68's. - You're also allowed to purchase your own optic.
