I assume that noboby here is in this predicament, but maybe so.
I'm wondering if it is possible for husband and wife to establish residence in two different states, respectively.
Here's the scenario....
She establishes residence in **, which saves us a bunch in property taxes (non residents pay a lot more).
I remain as a resident of *** to keep vehicles registered in *** to save on vehicle taxes and insurance, avoid form 1 changes, simplify a planned retirement "salary" income tax filing.
I've calculated the savings, and it's not minor. Estimated at $2400 per year, pretty big when basically retired.
We will have homes in both states, so that's covered.
Can't figure out why this wouldn't be possible.
