Well, now I want a 1911 .45!

Operation of a classic P series Sig is easier than a 1911 or your P238. Basically you chamber a round and lower the hammer via the decocker vs thumbing a safety up, ala 1911.

When you fire the gun you simply pull the trigger. No buttons or safeties to disengage. You have a long DA, double action pull, followed by short crisp SA, single action for follow up shots.

Sig P220s are a great 45 ACP platform. It was originally chambered in 9mm but for the US market they converted it to 45 ACP.
Suppose I'm used to moving the safety (down) before firing, though...it's my thumb rest! What would I do without one now that I've gotten used to it? Lol.
And I actually like that I have the safety, now I've adjusted to it.

You make the same motion and swipe down but nothing is there and your thumb simply rests in the same general location just below the slide.

Probably looked like the bottom one here...but maybe wood grips instead?

I have no idea....my shooting buddy, aka Button Pusher, brings a couple of range bags when we go shoot, so anything is possible, and I can barely keep up with the guns he has! I've met the fabulous 686, and the hardest-trigger-pull Walther, and some suppressed .22s. And lots of others, but those stick out!

Well, now I'm used to that nice little shelf to put my thumb on...lol.

I've been carrying the 1911 in .45 on and off since 84' when I was issued my first. Built my first one within a year and a year later owned two Coonan Model B's in .357 Magnum...

How'd you like those Coonans? I'm a 1911 & a .357 fan & have always been fascinated by those.

Love them, hunted with them, bowling pin competition, carried them open carry and shot ISPC with them. Would even feed but not cycle (needed lighter recoil spring) 148gr Full Wadcutters. Took one of the two to Germany for three yrs also. Great guns that are superbly well made. The Model Bs came with a 8 rd mag and notice the new Classic model have the original 7 rd mag. Just a tad larger than a 1911. Most holsters for a 1911 will fit a Coonan. Model A's used the swinging link same as the 1911. Model B's and Classic use's the Hi Power lock up. Comparison below of a M1911A1 and Model B. My first one had SN B002881

Only time I had a issue with the Coonan was right after I got to Bad Tolz, Germany in Feb 88' (base of the German Alps). First weekend there I had nothing to do and had 3' of snow on the ground. Family and truck weren't there yet so walked the two miles to the range down the street, bought two boxes of CCI Blazer 125 gr JSP (JHP illegal there, and didn't want to chase brass in the snow), loaded 5 rds in the mag, put eyes and ears on and locked and loaded. On the first round the case ruptured, flame cut the inside of the barrel, bullet exited center of target and had aluminum fragments hit my face. Mailed a letter to CCI with photos of the case, mailed the slide/barrel to Coonan and CCI paid for a new barrel and slide group and the two boxes of ammo. Pulled those bullets and powder and reseated them in some nickeled cases later. Haven't bought any CCI Blazer ammo since. Had Gerri at Coonan send me a set of checkered walnut grips for them to at the time. Later meet Gerri and Dan Coonan at one of the SHOT Shows in New Orleans during the early 90s.

or like me my sig p229 does not lock open after the last shot because my 1911 educated thumb is holding down the sig slide stop lever I like my sig but have given up on it locking open after last shot

There are two pretty easy ways to correct this. First is to tape a piece of grip tape on the frame just below the slide/slide release. Train your finger to “find the texture”.

The second is modify the slide top/slide release. Make it shorter by grinding it with a dremel. It will not stick out from the frame as much and when you ride it you will not push it down.

I have tried both ways and both work.

I told you when you first started do not listen to those who say a female can’t shot any firearm ... with proper training and confidence. “A .45 is toooo much gun for a woman” is BS male stupidity ... and you proved that idea was wrong today GOOD FOR YOU! As to weight more like 3lbs loaded and that along with the slower huge chunk of lead exiting it means the “push” you mention is the result rather than the “snap”. The 1911 platform is a little different than others with its trigger design and actual mechanics to fire (grip safety, thumb safety and trigger manipulation) so it does take a little practice to be smooth and correct if called upon so you and it flow as one in a natural way. Now that natural way though has been compared to a Jedi and his light saber ... elegant and deadly! Also 1911’s to me are kinda like vintage cars ... they need a little more attention and love to run while Glocks and such are Honda Civics ... they run damn reliable and economically with about anyone. 1911’s aren’t that complicated but they just need a little more love ... my carry gun (a 1911 hybrid SA EMP) gets loved every Sunday with a basic breaking down, cleaning and oiling. My Glocks ... I have hanging around maybe once a year?

Millie, do not buy a 1911 ... not yet. Once you go down that road you’ll never look at other handguns quite the same ... and they multiply quicker in my safe than all other types of firearms combined. But when you do buy that first one you’ll look at all your other semiautos a little different.

I love the "a 45acp is to much for a women" comment also, that's why my wife uses a Glock 30sf

I don’t like 1911’s....Add a Springer Professional to this picture and you get the idea. Millie, proceed carefully! It’s a slippery slope. 1911’s are like Ferrari’s, once you drive one.....you’re pretty much ruined. You’ve been warned....

He's referring to a Decocking Lever which issued to lower the hammer on a pistol. On Sigs it's that lever to the left of the slide stop and above the mag release.

Thanks. I couldn't think of the name at the moment I was typing the post!
Brain Fart!! LOL

Question for the 1911/ww2 history buffs in here - any truth to the rumor that a pilot shot down a Japanese plane as he was parachuting, with his 1911?

After I got interested in buying a 1911 and alot of research about what I wanted out of having one, manufacturers and looking at prices, I bought a Dan Wesson Guardian (bobtail commander model) as my first 1911 about a year or so ago. Best shooting pistol I ever bought. It feels perfect in my hand, aiming it feels natural to me, great accuarcy. Needless to say I fear I am already addicted to the 1911. Got another Dan Wesson (A2, GI frame) on order, waiting for it to ship. Should have it to take to the range in about a week. God help my wallet if I keep buying them.

1911s...two more yesterday. An as new Randall Commander and an as new Detonics. What in the Hell am I thinking???
Billy if I can ever make it to your place I want to shoot the Detonics. Don johnson carried one in an ankle holster in some of the early miami vice shows

If you'll join us on the 26th you can be The First one to Ever fire it. How's That????

Dang! Maybe I can be the second? Lol. That way, he can see if it works, and I won't get blown up if it doesn't.

That would be great

Billy nothing would make me happier, but my car engine locked up and my SUV only gets between 16 and 18 mpg. And it's 235 miles one way. Plus about 4 hour driveand about $75.00 for gas. I need to wait till I get another car that's better on gas and a time when I can stay in the area for a couple days. I have a friend that lives in Bolivia ,NC so I could visit him and come see you too !

Borrow a car? Ride with a friend? You're supposed to be the new gun guinea pig...lol.

The Detonics is one gun that I've never shot. It's a tad different from the standard 1911, and I drool over the idea of shooting a Dornaus & Dixon Bren Ten.Would also like to shoot a 460 S&W magnum
(Millie googling these guns.)

Welllllllllllllllll….No I can't help you. But I have shot one a great deal. I was lucky enough to get my deposit back when they went tits up. If you get a 10mm CZ or clone your dream will not know the difference.
