Is this wrong? I think this might be wrong…

I was (trying to) remove a muzzle device. Had my Reaction rod in place, receiver in a vise….and….barrel still turned. Dammit.

Now the gas block and handguard are wedged together….cant get a wrench on the barrel nut OR the muzzle device…

And here i thought I’d be headed out for a hike in a few minutes….

You can’t tighten the device back on and spin it the other way?

Might actually be a good time to take a hike and walk away from it for a little while. Some time things work better when your not aggravated.

Ok, before i was mildly annoyed. Now, I’m baffled.

The barrel pin is intact.
The receiver threads appear normal.
If I slide the barrel in the receiver, the M4 feeds ramps align perfectly.

So…how was the barrel spinning?

I think reaction rod goes into vise, not upper.
Is that what I did wrong? I’ve always used a BEV Block before picking this rod up in a “Hot Deal” a couple weeks ago.

Barrel extension unscrew?
The feed ramps line up with the M4 cuts quite nicely after dissasembly. So, i dont think so. But, that is the mist logical answer.

I don’t have one, but if you think about the mechanics of it, you want all the stress on the barrel rather than the upper. The reaction rod transfers all the torque to the vise.

I’d say the barrel extension is damaged, and you can test that by sticking the reaction rod in the barrel alone and seeing if it’ll spin on the vise, or it wasn’t inserted all the way into the upper and you are a very lucky man.

They would line up anyway I think. See this pic

Now I’m confused. When the reaction is in the vise and the barrel extension, if the barrel spins freely it means that all the threads from the barrel to the barrel extension are stripped. That seems unlikely. What am I missing?

In my infinite wisdom, and after careful consideration, i decided the best course of action would be to unscrew the barrel from the extension to investigate what @JimB questioned. So, this is clearly his fault.

meh...I'm not aggravated. Perturbed, befuddled and unsettled maybe, but not aggravated.

Ouch! That'll buff right out.

Ok, maybe not.

Yeah, might want to clamp the action rod next time.

what exactly were you doing?
were you taking apart an upper installed by somebody else?
what stage were you at?

wait, that's not unscrewing the barrel from the extension... that's removing the barrel nut from the upper.

it almost seems like at some point somebody put on a muzzle device with WAY too much torque, and trying to back it off just ... shredded things. still no idea how the receiver threads would tear inside the nut though.
none of this makes sense.

Some minor part naming issues, but at least now we know that the pin on an aero barrel extension is stronger than the upper.

This is exactly why the reaction rod was invented.

The pin in the barrel extension is probably no good. You might be able to salvage the barrel, but probably not worth the effort, get yourself an all new upper.

I was trying to remove/replace the muzzle device that had been installed by previous owner. I assumed it was rocksetted into place, so I soaked it overnight. Inserted reaction rod (incorrectly, but still should've helped), clamped receiver into vise, gave the muzzle device a reasonable tug and...bam...barrel spun in the extension. I assume the extension was not properly torqued.

Bound to happen after building, tearing down, rebuilding, etc dozens of these things over the years.

The receiver shearing is totally on me. I reinserted the barrel into the receiver and reaction rod and was trying to completely remove the barrel from the extension. That didn't turn out so well.

I'm not gonna cry about it, lesson learned.
