So after shooting my H&R M12 in the monthly rimfire challenge, I had made it a point to give the bolt a good cleaning due to extraction issues. The M12/5200 uses dual spring-loaded extractors which had accumulated a lot of crud over time.

To give you an idea... here's what they look like

Removing/reinstalling is a bit of a pain, so I pry the left one out and clean it out fairly well. I go to repeat the same thing with the right extractor and when I pry it back, KAPWINNGG... the parts are launched into space. I hear a small "tink" of metal-to-metal contact, but the part(s) are nowhere to be found in the clutter that is my garage.

So, after a visit to NUMRICH and $45 in parts & shipping I have replacements on the way. No more attempts at the rimfire challenge with this rifle for the next 7-10 days!

Heck of a way to end the day...

Disassemble inside a box on the table. I lost the safety spring on my Ruger Mk3. Wife found it two weeks later after I ordered a new one.

yeah, yeah... dumb $%* me for not using a towel/bag/etc. In my defense, usually removing the extractor from an M12 requires prying on the extractor and then using a punch to push it out from under the bolt body. In this case, just the act of levering the extractor sent it flying! It's possible that I broke it but until I find it on the floor, I'll never know.

I've launched more stuff than NASA. The cure is the 2 1/2 gallon monster baggies that allow plenty of room to work.

Double good news today! I was able to get the gun running again with the replacement parts from Numrich AND my wife found the old extractor while rummaging through the garage this morning!

and yes I used a big gallon plastic bag when reassembling today :)
