What’s your family’s traditional Christmas Eve meal?

When I was younger we would have lasagna for Christmas dinner. Somewhere along the way it changed to fillet steaks. I think it was last year my mother got a lamb roast at Costco and once was enough.

Lasagna.

Gravy is cooking today, although I didn’t have pork and beef bones so just using pork sausage, it’ll be good enough.

My best friend growing up had a large Italian-American family that all came to his father's house for Christmas. I envied that so much. Women making raviolis or tortellinis all day, Sunday gravy, the old men drinking and talking endless shit. One uncle would get liquored up on anisette and make those delicious little waffle cookies and tell stories about the little press he was using being from the 1800s and such. And loud, good Lord. But I always lived hanging out there.

We eat like Roman emperors on Xmas Eve. Just veggie trays, crackers, dips, cheese, pepperoni, salami, summer sausage and a little bit of red wine. And usually sometimes a shrimp cocktail. And my wife’s pizza fondue. With fresh baked bread.

We do the big Christmas Eve thing for dinner, my in laws do the big New Year's Eve shindig, and this is what they do. I love it. No real meal but ongoing snacking and drinking. Love it.

Christmas Day we have a brunch, and snack at dinner. We're thinking Chinese this year.

Growing up ,we were raised Italian, we are from a small island off of Sardinia, our whole neighborhood was related. We had Seafood on Christmas eve, being island people. Usually stuffed clams, fried shrimp, fried squid, octopus, sea urchins for appetizers, squid stew or rice with crab sauce for the main course. Of course a bunch of home made pastries and stuff afterward.
Christmas day was the Ravioli and either turkey or ham.

Lasagna here as well. Wife’s family tradition. Never knew I was marrying into a family with a tradition for every day of the week.

WHen I was a kid, Christmas eve was always held at my grandparents house (dads side). 99% of the time it was ham, "jet" potatoes, various salads, rolls, etc. I can remember grandma spending weeks prepping for christmas eve...she'd make all sorts of deserts amd treats, and chex mix (no joke we would get huge buckets of it, and shed make buckets for my friends too!). 7 layer bars, fudge...My grandparents would make this frozen drink too...somewhere I have the recipie, but its like frozen oj, frozen lemonade, 7up, and rum. So good.

I really miss those days!

Usually Chinese, but since we’re visiting family, it’s going to be prime rib, ham, turkey, stuffed shrimp, and a few other side dishes.

Only tradition we have is on her side. They do breakfast pizza Christmas Eve morning. Tonight we did soups.

Brunswick Stew, Chicken Pasta, and Potato Soup

My wife made a very delicious Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake D605A160-68D6-48C7-99AC-8C8696FCA2D3.jpeg38D442A3-898B-402A-AF90-713DEB76E743.jpeg

Christmas Eve is Chinese takeout family style after evening mass. Christmas day is blueberry pancakes for breakfast and prime rib for dinner.

Depends on whose home we’re visiting. Lost my FIL last year so the wife and son are visiting her in SoCal. I went out last weekend to help with finances and house chores. I’m home today with the dog.
Several holidays over the years I’ve been home with the dog and treat myself. A thanksgiving past was crab legs, a good healthy portion. For Christmas this year, I found a good deal on a prime rib roast. Here it is resting before being assembled.
