I have 3 223s in the AR platform:
1 NIB CMMG piston driven 16"
1 CMMG pistion driven, Nikon Scope upgraded trigger and other misc stuff done to it
1 PSA gas driven stock except for a better trigger and a cheap red dot.

The 2 guns that I shoot I have never had an issue with factory or my reloads.

If feel shooting out to 100 yards the PSA works. Past 100 yards the CMMG with the Nikon.

What would you use between 50 to 100 yards? How far would you feel comfortable with the AR and the Nikon 3x9 scope ringing steel. I am usually shooting 52 to 55 grn bullets between 29 and 3,000 feet per second.

The NIB I bought for my son but not sure if he really wants it so it will stay unfired in the safe for a while.

M&P 15x with Vortex PST 1-4 TMCQ, use it out to 300yd steel at Frontline Defense,
also use my Beretta ARX-100 and Tavor with Vortex SF II red dot.

I take my BPM Patrolman out to Frontline and shoot it from 20-300 yds with iron sights. During an Intro to Trace Armory class, @JBoyette had us shooting out to 5-550 yds. With iron sights, it was a little tricky to consistently hit but not impossible. With decent glass and the range to do it, I would shoot the same carbine from 20-500 yds

Depends.

Am I working new loads? Am I getting dope? Am I just shooting steel/paper? Shooting for groups?

That determines what or which AR(s) I bring

I’ve shot my psa carbine 556 with 55 gr Tula our to 400 yds on steel with an aim point pro.

How big of steel? Offhand or supported?

I don't see well enough to shoot small targets without mag.

With a 3x9 if the rifle/ammo will hold the groups I would expect a 1-2MOA plate at 400 to be pretty achievable.

Breaking clay pigeons at 412yds was not hard with a 12X from a bench. Smacking an IPSC silhouette offhand is not hard at 200 with irons.

My current range maxes at 200, I usually take my wife's LW 14.5" with irons and run drills or try to smack my 6" plates. My red dot lives on a shelf, boring, the carbine that wore it never gets any play either. My LPV wearing stoopid heavy 18" rifle comes out when I want to develop loads, my competitive side pops up, or my wife wants to play too.

I thinned the herd and am down to two rifles. I generally take both of them. One is a 6.8 SPCII I built and the other is an LWRC M6A5 upper on a PSA lower. The 6.8 has a 3.5-10x50 Vortex Viper and is a lot of fun out to 600 yds. The LWRC currently has a Millet DMR 2 1-6. In the past I had an Aimpoint Micro and a Primary Arms 2.5 Prism on it. The LWRC is a hell of a rifle and has never had a hiccup after God know how many rounds but gets heavy. I am getting parts togeather for a plain jane carbine that doesnt weigh a ton.

Mutt gun. Kreiger barrel, 1/7 twist, JP match trigger, 2x7 Leupold scope, rolling thunder comp, free float barrel, 60gr Nosler custom comp bullets. Head shots offhand on steel IPSC size shilouette at 200yds are boringly easy so I don't get it out very often. Problem with my home range is that 200yds is the max. If it had 400+, then the AR would be let out of the safe to play more often.

50-100? For something that close I would use my Glock or a knife.

Not sure what the ? was but I find myself at the range with my 12"SBR most of the time I take an AR. It's PSA upper and lower(I think) with a Geissele rapid fire trigger. Sold my eotechs and put an ACOG on it. Sweet shooter. It's good to go from zero to 200yds.

For the past few weeks, this one has been seeing a lot of trigger time

I made the switch from iron sights to optics for service rifle competition, so I need to figure out all new zeros and positions.

12" is perfect size for an AR, imo.

I assembled one from parts specifically for long range bench or prone shooting a while back. I had a stripped lower lying around and then stumbled onto a deal I couldn't resist on a 24" heavy stainless steel match bull barrel and the project just kinda hurtled downhill from there. The barrel is longer than necessary, the whole thing is too heavy and generally impractical; but if the wind isn't ridiculous, it'll actually go to 1000 easier than expected with 75-77 grain bullets. Also, it is much cheaper to shoot than my other long range rifles. As a consequence, it has become addictive and it ends up making its way into my truck almost every weekend.

50-100yds? My 10" .300BLK does that pretty well w/a PA red-dot. If I want "more", my 18" 6.8SPC with a Vortex Viper 2-7x32 shoots moa at 300yds with factory ammo (prone, with a rolled-up wool Army blanket for a "bag"). I'm sure it could do better/further, but not without bigger glass.

My steel plates are 6" and 10". I routinely shoot the 10" at 200yd with my .223 ARs with a red dot. In fact that's how I confirm my 50/200yd zero.

When I had access to a 300yd range 10yr ago, I often practiced shooting at 300yd w/ a 3-9x and mid-quality 55gr factory ammo. I found that for precision shooting I prefer 3-4x per 100yd.

As to your thread title, whatever the heck I feel like shooting that day.

I have yet to go and not bring (and shoot) all of my AR's, some times I'll bring a pistol or two if the weather is nice. The good thing about being retired is I can go shoot when the range is open on the weekend and then have all week to clean the rifles.

I have three 55.6, one 300 blackout, one 6.5 Grendel and I'm building a .223 Wyde
