I made a batch of straight lard soap. I used 40oz of genuine Nahunta lard, 5.27oz lye dissolved into 11oz of water and used 2.5tbs sugar in the lye/water mixture to increase suds.

Will post pics when I pop them out of the molds.

I did nothing. I did help out the inlaws by taking a load of crap in my truck for them to the dump.

I set possum traps to keep so I can kill them. They have a tendency to come around the chicken yard more this time of the year. War on Possums 2017 has begun.

Pulled weeds from spinach/kale/carrots/chard.
Started tomaotes and lettuce/mesculin indoors.
Picked basil and parsley for Sunday dinner.
Not bad for January.

I did the same thing, great minds think alike. The misses had me on my knees planting bulbs half the day also. I smell like dirt and bone meal now.

I tried to put boxing on the lower parts of the shed overhangs by myself. I am never gonna finish this thing at this rate.

I stacked lumber and started working on an axe head im making. When im done with the haed ill start the handle. I hsve lard and lots it, i need to make some soap.

I got all the muscadines in the orchard pruned and clipped off a lot of the long spindly shoots on the blueberries.

Killed a rabbit. Froze the meat i didnt use for jerky. The backs i set aside because its the best part. I got the liver and made pate. The hide is on the strecher and if i have time will tan it next weekend. Reinforced the fence so the pigs cant get out again. The rabbit meat is curing and will be ready to smoke before the weekend.

I LOVE fried rabbit livers. Similar to chicken but much larger.

Well the War on Possums has became the War on Possums and Coons since the coon decided to step in the trap. The coon went to the skinning shed with my buddy. 2 possums and 1 coon so far.

Made laundry detergent a few days ago. Found out a few things. It works easier if I shred the Naphtha finer, and it's less dust by hand. Heating the water on the turkey fryer helps too.

Tilled the two garden patches. Put lime down on both and fertilizer on one. Thew out some Kale and Hairy Vetch as cover crops. Hopefully we like the kale. The vetch is a companion for our tomatoes later in the spring. Planted a few cauliflower seeds to see if we can get a couple more before the spring plantings. Going to be close.

Since it looks like we might get an early spring we picked up so seed starters. Tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, sunflowers, and borage started. Filled up 2 50 spot seed starters.

How big was that rabbit? One good hungry and there would be nothing left but you did 10 things with this one rabbit?

Lol. Decent size. I used two legs for jerky or indian candy is what it really is that filled a sandwich bag. The back meat i set aside and then the other two legs and ribs i froze for stew. Waste not, want not. Livers come standard. Hearts can also be eaten. The rabbitsi rasied are silver fox. He was the last one i had. im now going to trade pigeons to a friend of mine for the rabbits. Less work for me and he gets tasty pigeon meat.

Washed out and refilled the water barrels. I had put it off. It had been ten months. There was no smell or visible funk inside the barrels above the water line. I drained some of the water into a white five gallon pail that is my shop trash can. It smelled too much like Hoppe's bore cleaner to tell if the water had any smell but I couldn't smell it when I stuck my nose in the the bung hole of the barrels.

I had used a little bleach with the water last time I refilled. I figure if a little is good, then more is better. I'll report back in a year.

My stored water will be 4 years in June...untouched. I did a pretty thorough round of testing on it last May and nothing bad is going on. It's just sitting there being water.

I've been thinking about doing something like this but I'm wondering if it's not overkill as I have a spring on the property that is usually good to go.

I might store a couple of barrels to cover the "usually" part.
I'm planning on putting in a couple barrels in the basement once I get my metal building up. I'm building a 28x40 2 bay with a "living space" for me to get away from everyone else in the house! I built a Man Cave in the basement a couple years back and now every body has to use it! Drives me crazy! So I'm moving my shop to the building (as soon as it's built!) and putting a lock on it!!!!! My kid won't be able to lose my tools and flute up my bench!

Hmmmmm, I'll have to take your word on that. Never had squab, but I've eaten a lot of doves in my day! A piece of japapeno pepper, a dab of cream cheese and wrapped in bacon! Grill until done and your tongue would slap your brains out if it was on your head!

I finally got off my ass and started B.O.Bs for the entire family. Starting with the standardized items for everyone. Food, water, shelter, clothing. The individualized items are going to take me a bit.

Don't forget a couple of means of starting a fire.

Like Jerry Clower said, sharpened 2 sticks of stove wood and pinned down the net wire fence so the hogs wouldn't root out na more?

I never scalded and scraped a pot belly, but if you need help I'm sure we could figure it out. You know they actually eat those things in Asia.

Years ago a neighbor slaughtered a pot belly that someone gave him. He said that it was all fat and not fit to eat.
