With a .308, a 12 ga, and a .22 a person could hunt 90% or more of all animals in the USA.
But most of my NC deer hunting shots have been less than 65 yards, so a 30-30 with a 4x scope it what I grab 90% of the time
LMAO!! I hunted with a 303 for years until I discovered the 6.8 SPC. Still shoot my Enfield at the range, but prefer the ergonomics of the AR. They can be adjusted to fit anyone.But. But. But. That’s like false advertising, I guessed a 303.
Nothing like blowing through a shoulder. My tendency to overthink shooting deer is a contributing factor in my yearly search for the perfect deer rifle. Without fail I end up using my Bergara B-14 Hunter in 308 or my Bison Armory 18" 6.8 SPC and the new rifle gets left in the safe or traded off after shooting the obligatory doe. That said I have high hopes for the 26" HB Howa HS Precision 6.5 Creedmoor I bought a few months ago after convincing myself I needed a damn beanfield rifle. Regardless of caliber I want a bullet that will blow through a shoulder. If I am hunting thick areas/woods I generally use an old beat to hell H&K stamped Benelli M1-Super 90 or Remington 870 Special Field and 00 Buckshot.
a .308 is a NC beanfield rifle lol
But the bow and arrow are much more fun than being the Indian. My son has access to almost any cartridge that he wants or needs. He hunts exclusively with a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem with a Leupold VX1 2-7x33. I have seen him shoot a running deer twice offhand with it at 100+ and drop the animal.
It's not the arrow, it's the brave with the bow.
Nothing like blowing through a shoulder.
I have gotten flack for my love of shoulder shots but I would much rather loose 4lbs of stew meat than the entire deer. Deer hunting has been a life long passion but I still love to kill them. While I dont consider it hunting I shoot a lot of deer on depredation permits---I have several family members who expect me to shoot any deer I see in their bean fields.
I’ll play.
The newer model Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 with a Nikon 3x9x40. I added a YHM Turbo to it. Perfect for all my NC and MI hunts.
Oh LORT! You don did it now, shooting with that inferior varmint round in a short barrelI didn’t shoot this one but a cousin did.
He used my 10.5” pistol, .223 Wylde barrel. Heart shot and the buck ran about 20 yds. Michigan buck too, he was a fat bodied guy.
That’s one beautiful rifle!I might try deer hunting this year with my Ruger 77 .257 Roberts. I've never shot anything with it but paper...ashamed to say.
