I'm in the process of replacing my broken toilet. It looks like the flange sticks up +/-1.5" off the tile. It seems a bit excessive. The toilet was original to the 1970s house and I'm not sure if a modern toilet will fit. I was going to use a stabdard Johnny ring. Any plumbers know if this will be an issue?

They make extension ones if needed, the cones stack where you can get it flush with the floor.

Edit, erp, I read that backwards. They have thin rings at the store that will fit as well, but it should go on relatively easily.

My flange/pipe is sticking up a bit higher than I'm used to. Sorry if my post wasn't clear

Cut the pipe flush to floor and install new flange. Then use "normal" wax ring to set the new toilet. Flange should set on floor

One of these will help with cutting the pipe.

It was just replaced with modern, thinner tile. It seems like I'll need to cut a little over an inch to put it into spec

Sounds like you had a mud job and tile removed. Cut the plastic pipe flush and get a new flange that goes inside the pipe and mount it to the floor flush. Some you don't even glue.Screenshot_20231212_123517_Chrome.jpg

I was always a wax ring guy. They do work and are a tested method.

My last toilet removal for a project, I put in a newer rubber ring, they are expensive. And when we do floors throughout next, I don't have to mess with wax again.
